RMS Resins New/Re-molds, or why I can't feel my arms!

Postby dreinecke » Mon Sep 02, 2013 9:39 pm

Just the other night, Bibbster and I were talking about Tendinitis and Carpultunnel. Well, I have both and royally set mine off this week. All for a good cause, of course...

After 4 nights in the basement, I have finally finished a bunch of work:

Remolded:
1970 Firebird - This is a really nice mold
1970 Maverick - This is coming out of retirement as version 2.0 and boasts some nice improvements - separate grille/bumpers/new interior tray that is much nicer and a little detailed.
1968 Ferrari 612p - This is also coming out of retirement and is the Aurora re-pop, not the full kit version I also sell. Much cheaper if you want a simple build and not the winged car.
I also reproduced the Plymouth GTX and Dodge Challenger from a Republic Tool drag strip set. Those two cars are about 1:43 and are impossible to get without spending a fortune...I'm about to change that.
BIG NEWS for those awaiting the Scalextric Cougar - The Bud Moore Transporter is also out of retirement and now has a simple chassis to facilitate easy mounting and motorizing if one wishes ;)

New:

The last one is the Aurora 312p - I finally got around to making this one and it is a beauty!

What's all of this look like?

That's almost 3.5 GALLONS of silicone...roughly $350.

Everything is completely ready for resin testing tomorrow. I'll post some casting pictures and get the website updated in the next day or two.

Looking forward to seeing a couple of these, like the Ferraris and the Firebird.

That is an impressive array of boxes with goo! I wish that more of the home industries were as productive as that.. having waited for a little over 8 months for some resin bodies from a person in the UK who shall remain anonymous for now.
BTW I know for a fact that carpal tunnel syndrome can be cured with a simple operation (pure self interest from a customers viewpoint..)

Thanks folks, it has been fun getting back into it. I can't remember the last time I did much molding, especially new or improved things. I have a bunch of stuff waiting behind it...

One is the 1966 Dart I showed once for Tullius' T/A car. The Rapid Prototype part is VERY rough. It is on the bench in goo with the others. I needed to back cast it to begin carving on that. So, there is another new one in the bunch...that needs a ton of work when I can feel my fingers again.

My mom had the surgery Balsa, so I know first hand that it works. It only flares up when I'm doing a ton of stuff and this was one of those weeks.

Today's carpal tunnel surgery makes the one I had look like it was done by cavemen. It was only 20 years or so ago, but you would think it was a century ago when you see the incision comparison. I got mine from typing and doing research for dissertation, and one hand was much worse than the other, so they did that one first. It took forever to be ready to type again. The second one was done with a tiny version of a endoscope, and had only a little scratch of an incision, nearly instant results, and is just as stable to this day. What a difference a few years makes!

David; What did you use for the RP model? If you used an FDM , the model will be rough. This is due to how an FDM
machine works, by layering a plastic filament. A true 3-D printer will give you a much better finish, as it uses a very fine
powder media. Both can use the same STL cad files.
