My Fly classics are still some of my favorite slot cars. They make for some good, close racing on my track and the type and style and period of cars they represent are one of my favorites (along with Can Am). I have well over one hundred of these little gems. Never had much issue with any of them except for the occasional cracked wheel hub, a rare few whose tires leach oil, and a few popped drive shafts on the front-motored cars. All problems that are easily and inexpensively solved.

So, Fast Co., if you were picking 4 of those Fly Classics for a 200 lap race on your track, which would it be? Goal is to have a competitive race with similar type cars. Top qualifier gets lane choice to start, and cars rotate lanes every 50 laps.

Well, if you let me choose the L&M Porsche 917/10 and the #6 Sunoco Lola T70 would be on the grid. Of course, we'd probably have to clone Mark Donohue so he could drive both cars at the same time.

Just curious if you have favorites. This is one of mine but is not in my collection, yet.

The 917-10s suffer from clamshell construction. Pretty, but not as fast as the Chevrons, 917 spyders, and the 908-3s. The 917k ,908-2, and 512 Coda Lunga seem to be good match ups too, at least in our club.

Same with the HRSS McLarens. But at least these clamshell cars don't have the same twisted chassis issues as the Monograms.

Racing like against like is often the best solution, but mixing manufacturers does allow the widest range of types and liveries. One way to balance things across brands is by choice of rear tires. HSRR, Monogram, and Fly cars get PG tires on my track, while Slot.It cars run on stock tires.

They look good no doubt but so does a die cast. A good rolling will out run most Fly cars out of the box. I bought one or two when I first got into 1/32 and was very disappointed with the quality. Since then I only have bought them for the nationals where we change the running gear anyway. I think everyone forgets how overpriced they were about 5 years ago and how bad they are out of the box. Now if things happen as I have been told in the very near future we may see a totally new style of Fly cars.
