Summer is here and racing is underway. After some software problems setting the simulation program up for the new series the cars hit the track.

Starting order for race 1: (12 cars - 40 laps)
1) #9 Camaro - Hksak25
2) #8 Firebird - CARacing
3) #1 Camaro - Tusco Todd
4) #2 Mustang - RMS racing
5) #77 Challenger - Arroldn
6) #41 Cougar - Texas leaguer
7) #22 Mustang - BARC1 racing
8) #42 'Cuda - Pepsi 62
9) #40 Camaro - Artius
10) #1J Javelin - CJR
11) #28 Mustang - Chappy
12) #13 Camaro - Vonsirius

The results will be posted after I get to eat some dust on a road trip to see 1:1 dirt modified racing in NY. Oh the suspense...

TL Racing has been quiet of late. Being a rather loose bunch, we'll wait and see the results before we decide on the next course of action. We've set our sights pretty high. We're looking for a top 12 finish, and enough of the car left to make it easy to load on the trailer.

I would be willing to conduct time trials on my 55' mdf race course for anyone willing to send their Trans Am car for a run. I will post all results. I propose a 50 lap time trial for which I will provide: fastest lap, total ET and number of off track excursions. I can even provide a second driver to make the same run for comparison. I will return all cars in the same box they are sent to me in. Anything other than stock condition will be noted in the results.

Trans Am Challenge – race # 1 report:

The #9 Camaro of Hksk25 led the field to the green flag and held onto the lead on the first lap. The only cars advancing positions on the first lap were the #41 Cougar of Texas Leaguer which passed the #77 Challenger of Arroldn for 5th position and the #1J Javelin of CJR which passed the Artius #40 Camaro for 9th place. The amazing charge to the front for these cars continued as CJR’s Javelin powered into the lead by lap 5 followed with the #28 Mustang of Chappy in 2nd place and the #22 Mustang of BARC racing in 3rd.

By lap 10 the #40 Camaro of Artius took over 3rd place from BARC’s Mustang and the top 5 positions were 1) #1J – CJR, 2) #28 – Chappy, 3) #40 – Artius, 4) #22 – BARC1, and 5) #13 – Vonsirius.

The only major move between laps 10 and 15 was the #22 of BARC1 getting back by the #40 Camaro of Artius for 3rd place. This Camaro vs. Mustang battle was shaping up as one of the best story lines of the race.

At the halfway point of the race the race order was: 1) CJR, 2) Chappy, 3) BARC1, 4) Artius, 5) Vonsirius, 6) Pepsi62, 7) Texas leaguer, 8) CARacing, 9) Tusco Todd, 10) David-RMS racing, 11) Hksk25, and 12) Arroldn. As can happen in this form of racing, the starting field had nearly flipped.

By lap 25 the #77 Challenger of Arroldn passed HKSK25’s Camaro and moved into 11th place.

Between lap 25 and 30 the #2 Mustang of David-RMS racing moved ahead of the #1 Camaro of Tusco Todd and was in 9th place.

As the rest of the field settled into their positions things were heating up in front. By lap 31 Chappy’s #28 Mustang was right on the back bumper of the #1J Javelin of CJR. The two were only separated by 0.06 seconds at the start of lap 32, and coming out of turn 3 on the way into the hairpin turn Chappy made the pass and took over the lead. This was the last pass of the race which came to an end on lap 38 when the red flag came out due to software issues. However, but this time Chappy had begun to pull away and solidify his lead and no other positions were being contested.

The finishing order was: 1) Chappy - #28 Mustang, 2) CJR - #1J Javelin, 3) BARC1 - #22 Mustang, 4) Artius - #40 Camaro, 5) Vonsirius - #13 Camaro, 6) Pepsi62 - #42 Cuda, 7) Texas leaguer - #41 Cougar, 8) CARacing - #8 Firebird, 9) Tusco Todd - #1 Camaro, 10) David-RMS racing - #2 Mustang, 11) Aroldn - #77 Challenger, 12) Hksk25 - #9 Camaro.

There were a few spins during the race, 2 by the #8 Firebird and 1 by the #42 Cuda. The Cuda’s spin allowed 4 cars to get by it in the hairpin turn but it battled back for a 6th place finish.

The Javelin’s charge from 10th place to 1st in just 5 laps was unexpected and shows that Scalextric seems to have hit a homerun with this new inline model. However a Pioneer Mustang eventually won the race with another Pioneer notchback Mustang finishing in 3rd place. All cars were outfitted with PG tires.

The cars in finishing positions 9 – 12 will get some tuning work and start up front in race #2 as the finishing order from race 1 will be inverted. As the series goes on points will be used to invert starting positions. The points structure to be used to keep things close is still being determined. Future races will be 35 laps in length which should allow all cars to reach their rightful finishing positions.

Modlerbob - I'm going to take you up on your offer and am thinking about which Trans Am cars to send you. I have about a dozen that haven't been used in a racing series yet and I think I'll send you 5 or 6 to run on your track for comparisons.

If I can make use of the data you collect, I might send you all 12 cars in the Trans Am challenge so that one of the 7 races in the series is on a different track.

We here at TL Racing are buoyed by the results of the first race. The Cougar is preforming up to our lofty expectations. Our goal was to finish in the top 12, which was adequately accomplished by our driver Stan "Stab Steering" Smocker. At this time, the garage will remained closed, as crew and management doesn't want to mess with a good thing. Congrats to all winners.

Trans Am Challenge – race # 2 report:

After points were awarded for race 1, the standings were (pts):
1) Chappy - # 28 Camaro (15 pts)
2) CJR - #1J Javelin (12 pts)
3) BARC1 - #22 Mustang (10 pts)
4) Artus - #40 Camaro (9 pts)
5) Vonsirius - #13 Camaro (8 pts)
6) Pepsi62 - #42 Cuda (7 pts)
7) TL racing - #41 Cougar (6 pts)
8) CARacing - #8 Firebird (5 pts)
9) Tusco Todd - #1 Camaro (4 pts)
10) RMS racing - #2 Mustang (3 pts)
11) Arroldn - #77 Challenger (2 pts)
12) Hksks25 - #9 Camaro (1 pt)

During pre-race preparation the teams in points positions 9 – 12 were allowed to tune their cars. Roger Penske, original builder of Hksk25’s Sunoco Camaro, interceded on his behalf and provided another car, the #19 University of Pittsburgh ’68 Camaro for the team to use. Race officials allowed the swap because the Camaros were essentially identical while the #19 car appeared to be more competitive. The other cars were lubed and body screws adjusted for enhanced float.

The points standings were inverted to set the starting order for race #2. The #19 Camaro of Hksk25 led the field to the green flag with Chappy’s #28 Mustang starting in 12th position. There were no position changes during the first lap. On lap 2 RMS racing’s Mustang got by Arroldn’s Challenger for 2nd place and Vonsirius’ Camaro got by Pepsi62’s Cuda for 7th place.

By lap 10 the bright orange #13 Camaro of Vonsirius had powered it’s way to 2nd place and was chasing down the #19 Camaro of Hksk25 which was still in 1st place.

The race order at lap 10 was: 1) Hksk25, 2) Vonsirius, 3) RMS racing, 4) Artus, 5) Pepsi62, 6) CJR, 7) CARacing, 8) BARC1, 9) Tusco Todd, 10) Arroldn, 11) Chappy, 12) TL racing (due to spin on lap 7 which resulted in losing 7 positions).

Vonsirius’ Camaro caught and passed the leading Camaro of Hksk25 on lap 12. By lap 15 Artus’ Camaro had also gotten by Hksk25 for 2nd. The Javelin of CJR was 4th and the Mustang of RMS racing was 5th. CJR’s Javelin moved from it’s 11th place starting position to 4th, while Chappy’s Mustang inched it’s way from 12th to 9th, and remained caught up in traffic in the back half of the field.

On lap 16 CJR’s Javelin took over 3rd from Hksk25 and seemed to be on it’s way to the front, but the Camaros in 1st (Vonsirius) and 2nd (Artus) were setting a furious pace.

The race order at lap 20 was: 1) Vonsirius, 2) Artus, 3) CJR, 4) Pepsi62, 5) BARC1, 6) Hksk25, 7) RMS racing, 8) CARacing, 9) Tusco Todd, 10) TL racing, 11) Chappy (due to a spin on lap 19 during which it lost 2 positions), and 12) Arroldn.

By lap 25 the #22 Mustang of BARC1 got by Pepsi62’s Cuda for 4th position and Chappy had recovered from his spin and was back in 9th. On lap 27 Hksk25 got out of shape and lost 2 positions, falling from 3rd to 5th position. RMS racing’s #2 Mustang was now in 6th position.

Over the last 5 laps of this 35 lap race, the only position change was CARacing’s Firebird moving from 8th to 6th. The father and son duel of Camaros up front ended with Vonsirius holding onto the lead for the win.

Finishing order (race pts): 1) Vonsirius (15 pts) , 2) Artus (12 pts) , 3) BARC1 (10 pts), 4) Pepsi62 (9), 5) CJR (8 pts), 6) CARacing (7 pts), 7) RMS racing (6 pts), 8) Hksk25 (5 pts), 9) Chappy (4 pts) 10) TL racing (3 pts) , 11) Tusco Todd (2 pts), 12) Arroldn (1 pt).

CJR’s Javelin went from starting 11th to the 5th place finish position showing it’s still a formidable team despite not achieving a podium position. But perhaps the most impressive performance was Pepsi62’s SCX Cuda which held its own in the middle of the pack and eventually fought it’s way to a 4th place finish.

Point standings:
1) Vonsirius - #13 Camaro (23 pts)
2) Artus - #40 Camaro (21 pts)
3) BARC1 - #22 Mustang (20 pts) [tiebreaker is most recent finish]
4) CJR - #1J Javelin (20 pts)
5) Chappy - # 28 Camaro (19 pts)
6) Pepsi62 - #42 Cuda (16 pts)
7) CARacing - #8 Firebird (12 pts)
8) RMS racing - #2 Mustang (9 pts)
9) TL racing - #41 Cougar (9 pts)
10) Hksks25 - #19 Camaro (6 pt)
11) Tusco Todd - #1 Camaro (6 pts)
12) Arroldn - #77 Challenger (3 pts)

The cars in points positions 8 – 12 will get some tuning work and start up front for race #3.

We at TL Racing are going to have a talk with our driver. We don't mind the spin, or that he stopped for a hot dog before returning to the race. What concerns us is that he didn't bring any hot dogs back for us. Cheers to the podium finishers.
