Current Carrera cars run their lights through the digital chip. Older issue Carrera analogue cars had a lighting board in place of the chip to run lights. Unfortunately, Carrera has dropped the lighting boards in analogue cars. It was probably done as a cost saving measure. Carrera digital cars have a switch installed that will allow it to run on an analogue track. Scaley cars do not run their lights through the chip so they will have lights either in analogue or digital.
For my tastes, I would prefer brake lights over head or tail lights. It is cool to see your car's brake lights come on when braking into a curve. Neither Scaley or Carrera lighting boards have a brake light function. I have some older Fly cars that do have brake lights in addition to head and tail lights. I think Ninco used to sell add on lighting boards with brake lights but you would have to check on that. I believe Slot.it's add on lighting boards have brake lights, but once again, that would have to be checked too as I have never actually used them.
