Ford-Ferrari Wars Proxy - Driving Impressions

Postby Audi1 » Sun Mar 13, 2016 12:42 pm

:auto-driving: Since we may have 40 or so cars show up for the starting grid of this proxy, I'm going to post my driving impressions of the cars as they come in. That way this won't get stuck behind the other first race details after the 31st.

All of this will be based on running at The River Run; routed mfd, 65" average lane length, non-magnetic braid, flat latex surface, 10V. I'm running each car in the middle lane (white) for 10-20 laps to get used to it, then 10 laps for fastest lap. I'm using the same controller positions for all cars; middle position for both sensitivity and brakes. For the qualis, the controller will be matched to your car before the run, so your times will likely improve.

For now, I'll give you fastest lap time, 10 lap average time and driving notes. I'll be adding to this thread as more cars arrive.

:auto-driving: #20 eightwheels - fastest = 7.156, average = 7.30, comments: smooth runner, good brakes, struggles some with grip in turns, rear tires could benefit from profiling, pod is a little tight

:auto-driving: #9 aloha - fastest = 6.981, average = 7.20, comments: smooth car, a little loose in the turns, SC-0020 motor spools up quickly and may be too much motor for this tack, pod works well

:auto-driving: #85 aloha - fastest = 6.483, average = 6.56, comments: nice car! great brakes, good acceleration, NSR 22k motor and gearing work well on this track, can be pushed, easy driver, pod somewhat tight works well with chassis

:auto-driving: #24 chrisguyw - fastest = 6.386, average = 6.57, comments: nice car! light, agile, great brakes, tight pod but works well with the chassis, piranha motor with perfect gearing for this track, lots of body float, rear tires really hook-up well!

:auto-driving: #24 pappy - fastest = 6.769, average = 6.91, comments: light car, unreal brakes - best I've seen in a long time, smooth, no chatter in the turns, easy driver

:auto-driving: #11 urbanwarrior - fastest = 6.375, average = 6.474, comments: great car! combo of chassis and Ferrari GTO body really works well together, fast, smooth, good brakes, easy driver, tall IL gearing (10:23?), really hooks-up on this track

:auto-driving: #5 urbanwarrior - fastest = 6.953, average = 7.17, comments: challenging mix of HRS2 chassis and Monogram Cobra body, could use more brakes, good acceleration, struggles for grip exiting turns, tall IL gearing (10:23?), challenging driver, are those silicone rears.......? Looks great on the track!
:auto-driving: #23 chappy - fastest = 6.386, average = 6.66, comments: smooth runner, great acceleration, good brakes, stable platform but no body float, an occasional "no-warning" deslot.

:auto-driving: #33 orakei racer - fastest = 6.961, average = 7.14, comments: feels "tight", good acceleration struggles a little with grip exiting turns, some tire chatter in the turns, stable platform - won't deslot!

:auto-driving: #87 retro racer 44 - fastest = 7.266, average = 7.47, comments: very "loud", struggles with grip, quite a bit of chatter exiting turns, good SL acceleration, good brakes, very low, something may be dragging (spur gear, body screws, ?).

:auto-driving: #9 retro racer 44 - fastest = 7.323, average = 7.56, comments: feels heavy, chatter coming off the turns, excellent brakes, good SL acceleration, stable platform

:auto-driving: #33 Brumos RST - fastest = 6.906, average = 6.97, comments: "peppy" feel, good SL acceleration, struggles a bit with grip in the tight corners and esses, good brakes, light and nimble

:auto-driving: #2 redlynr - fastest = 6.155. average = 6.35, comments: fast and nimble, smooth, quiet, good brakes, great acceleration, no chatter, stable - can be pushed, won't deslot, easy driver

:auto-layrubber: #79 smokeio - fastest = 6.051, average = 6.27, comments: fast and smooth, quiet, good acceleration, good brakes, no chatter, very easy driver

:auto-driving: #22 nhdungeonracer - fastest = 6.792, average = 6.93, comments: smooth car, good acceleration, good brakes, light front end, struggles a little with grip on this track

:auto-driving: #24 (Ford GT-40) audi1 - fastest = 6.385, average = 6.54, comments: home track car, needs more grip, balance good, brakes could be better

:auto-driving: #24 (Ferrari 330/P4) audi1 - fastest = 6.450, average = 6.63, comments: another home track car, heavy Scaley body, rear slides out in corners, takes attention to drive

:auto-driving: #8 florida_slotter - fastest = 6.209. average = 6.34, comments: smooth, light, handles well, good acceleration, good brakes, medium-easy driver

:auto-driving: #7 steeveew - fastest = 6.413, average = 6.68, comments: very light car, great acceleration with the SC-0020 motor, good brakes, some chatter in the turns, can break traction on the straights, smooth driver

:auto-driving: #4 gascarnut - fastest = 6.691, average = 6.77, comments: very stable platform, good acceleration, good brakes, tails-out some exiting corners, needs more grip on this track

:auto-driving: #1 gascarnut - fastest = 6.619, average = 6.71, comments: very smooth, well balanced, good acceleration, very good brakes, needs more grip on this track, possible passenger's side front wheel binding on wheel well

:auto-driving: #11t arrold - fastest = 7.435, average = 7.56, comments: very tight pod on an already stiff HRS2 chassis, car sounds tight, braids are short for a braided track, good acceleration, brakes OK, chatters coming off turns, predictable handling, needs more grip for this track

:auto-driving: #6 arrold - fastest = 6.907, average = 7.16, comments: no pod float, very light front end, good acceleration, great brakes!, a little chatter coming off corners, some unexpected "offs", needs more grip on this track

:auto-driving: #3 jscot111 - fastest = 6.525. average = 6.66, comments: light car, very good acceleration, good brakes, some chatter coming off the turns, can break traction on the straights, small slash on passenger's side rear contact patch, needs a little more grip on this track, easy driver

:auto-driving: #9 slotting since 1963 - fastest = 6.356, average = 6.48, comments: light front end, great acceleration, unreal brakes, can be driven deep into corners, smooth, no chatter, some tail-outs in the usual tight corners

Hi Dale,

The 6.4 will definitely be a good time on my track and we'll see what some of the other cars can do when they arrive.

I was going to do the driving impressions all at the same time, but with 40+ cars expected, that's a lot to do in one sitting when you have quali and the race still in front of you.

No, no guinea pigs here.....................perhaps a hamster or too, though..............................

Hi Allan,

On my car you have fastest lap as 6.769 and the average time as 5.91. One of them as to be a mis-type.

Yup, you're right, Butch. That "5" should be a "6". Thanks for picking that one up for me. Correction made.

The gearing in my cars hooked up well on Phase II's 90+ft track. Did t think to change them to a smaller variety for traveling in a proxy. Oh well we will see how they do. That ole well travelled Ferrari GTO seems to be quite well suited for your track Allan.
Thanks for the feedback.

Tracking says my box is at the PO in Merrimac as of 2:30 pm today. Hope it didn't get run over by a USPS truck like one of the last ones I sent south.

Cheers,

Ohhhhh, could be a problem.......... We had an unexpected, major snowstorm yesterday and although the mail did go through, one of the big plows took out our mailbox..........can't even find it..........hope your car wasn't in it before the plow incident..........!!

:liar:

(just kiddin', Keith - I'll look for it/them today and will try to get a shake-down and pics up by tonight.)
