These gears are a modulus of 0.5 Pinion is 8 tooth and the spur gear is 24 tooth. As you mentioned this is about as big as you can go with a spur gear and keep the wheel to scale. As you can see in the photo, a person has to be careful with truing the tires. If you get to aggressive the diameter of the tire can be taken down too much and the spur gear hits the track.
I cannot find a smaller pinion with a 1mm shaft and this modulus. Hence the gears are a little too tall for my liking, but on my home track, racing against equally equipped cars, they are fun to drive.
I would love to find a 6 tooth pinion that would work, but have not found anything yet. This would move the torque curve to a better spot for handling and control. The top end of these cars is pretty good, but they lack punch coming out of a corner.
Mounting the FF030 motor would also help get more torque, so I may try sanding the Lego blocks down more, I had angled them in the past but without a proper beveled pinion this was less then ideal.
A smaller crown gear just made the gearing too tall with these small motors.
For those wanting to know. Spur gear teeth+2 *the modulus = diameter. So a 24 +2 *0.5 = 13mm diameter spur gear.
