Sunbeam Tiger build 2

Postby VTECFOUR » Sun Sep 22, 2019 5:24 pm

My first Sunbeam Tiger build was a simple inline motor layout so I'm curious on how a sidewinder with a wire chassis will compare.

viewtopic.php?f=45&t=15613

Had this resin body in the wings for awhile, so cut, prepped and gathered parts for the chassis.

- .055" piano wire for the main rails and front axle uprights
- .064 brass strips for the guide tongue and crossmembers
- 5/32" brass tubing for the guide post
- Scale Auto universal guide, 7mm deep
- 3DRon S can motor pod

Will roll on the same Mitoos 19mm and 17.7mm rims on homemade urethane tires as build 1.

Chassis pieces are together now with added .032" brass strip sidepans. Mistakenly swapped the main rails and only realized after soldering but it's "flat and square" as emphasized by Chris W and works.

Assembled and rolling on Mitoos 19mm (rear) and 17.7mm (front) rims on trued urethane versions of Scale Auto 24 x 10 tires.

Motor's an early Slot It charcoal-colored S can with an already mounted 12t, 6.5mm pinion from my salvage bin. Think it's rated around 20K rpm. Spur gear's a 38t, 19mm so that's a 3.17:1 ratio.

Has a nice driveable feel that works well on my short and twisty wood track.

Onto the body now.

Body's mounted with a tri-post set up, one up front and on each side.

Shaped the headrest fairing from a round cosmetic brush handle.

Next up, the driver figure.

Nice Job Dan..

The motor is an older Slot-it V12/2, that was rated at 23K, but, it did have "softish" magnets vs. their newer stuff, which made it seem more linear......a real nice "club track" motor.

With the taller tires, the 3.2/1 ratio should work well, but with the relative lack of torque, don't hesitate to drop a tooth on the pinion, if you need a bit more snap/brakes.

Cheers

Hi Chris,

Yeah, think I'll go to an 11t pinion.

After mounting the body and "seeing" it run around, I'd like a bit more acceleration on my small track.

Thanks.

Tamiya pink primer sprayed on.

Mocked the driver figure in place. Particularly pleased with the headrest fairing affect.

More paint prep and then final coats of Tamiya TS-8 Italian Red.

Done.

Sprayed on the Tamiya Italian Red final coats followed by decal application of vintage American Line decals and then covered with Tamiya semi-gloss clear. Installed the driver figure from a Fujimi kit and wind deflector made from the bottom of a Pepsi 750ml bottle. And lastly paint detailed the head and tail lights.

Quite pleased with the results, modelling and performance-wise.

Changed the motor to a Scalextric Sport 25K with a 11t pinion (3.45:1 gear ratio) and that perked the car up.

Gained almost 2/10's on my small track for fast lap and will be used for the 1/24 class running on the new soon to be built GVSCC track with a 18 foot straightaway.
