Owens Corning 427 Corvette

Liking the bigger scale more and more, so got this Monogram kit out of the closet and gathered running parts.

Image

BRM Trans Am rims and tires match the kit's wheel/tires diameter spot on. With a little filing, the wheel insert will fit right in.

Image

The engine hood and rear flares fit well and were glued to the body.

Would like to try a hybrid sidewinder chassis on this one.

I was wondering if the rear quarter decal covered the added flare, so now I know.

Thanks for posting.

Cut and gathered pieces for an inline ladder-type chassis.

- .055" piano wire for main rails and front axle uprights
- .032"x .75" brass strip for rear and middle crossmembers
- .064" x .75" brass strip for guide tongue
- Slot It 20.5k Flat 6 motor
- Slot It 10t pinion gear and Plafit/Sigma 30t crown gear for 3mm axle
- Sloting Plus 3mm axle
- Sloting Plus 3mm rear axle bushings.
- JK F1 motor pod (.75" wide)
- Scale Auto universal guide with Samson guide post

Should be together soon.

Great to see the "parts list" associated with the build!
Looking forward to seeing it's progression!

Filed and sanded down the kit's wheels into inserts.

Fit well.

Flat black on the spokes to come. May do aluminum on the chrome.

Inserts are turning out nice! Dig the fact that they look to even include the valve stem!

Basic ladder chassis pieces soldered together.

Image

Getting some 4mm brass tube to accept the 3mm (.118") front axle.

Could use 5/32" tube with an inside diameter of .125" but rather minimize any slop.

Chassis's rolling.

Mocked the body on.

Looking for a final stance with the body slightly higher and the wheels/tires tucked in.

Body's mounted.

Not too slammed which is my tendency.

On to getting the chassis powered.

Running chassis's assembled.

Image

Crown gear was a real tight fit. Required installing the bushings with the thin flange on the inside and reducing the width of the gear's boss.

Image

Worked out so there's no rubbing.

In tight corners I could see the front tires hopping. They're pretty wide so a coating of Sally Hansen's Hard as Nails, Invisible 109 nail polish cut down the friction and eliminated the hop.

Runs fine.

Interior tray modified to accept the chassis. Kit didn't provide a driver figure, so a Fujimi kit one was prepared.

Being an open cockpit car, the driver figure was a must for me.

Ended up with Plan B on the paint and decals. Applying the kit's Owens Corning rear quarter panel decal was disastrous. Wouldn't conform to the wheel arch flare even with decal softener and cracked into pieces.

Sprayed on Tamiya TS-16 Yellow and covered with the kit's number decals and sponsors from a Nascar kit.

Turned out well enough.

All that's left are the wheel inserts. Kit's Torque Thrust-like five spoke wheel inserts are presently being used for a mold but I've got some BRM mini lite inserts in the mail. Not sure which I'll use but they'll be highlighted in the same gray as the exhaust pipes.

On to the next build.
