Mini Cooper S build - front wheel driven

Been awhile on this project, but had a chance to test, chassis-only, on Luf's Big Targa.

Image

Ran in different formats and got these recorded fastest laps.

Front wheel drive
- front guide - 7.769 seconds
- front and rear guide - 6.937

Rear wheel drive
- front guide - 7.356
- front and rear guide - 6.591

Was surprised on how much faster the front and rear guide format was.

Makes me pause about the quality of my driving in the conventional front guide format.

Oh well, build on.

Chrisguyw, chassis guru, put this thought into my head, so I've begun my first anglewinder (AW) hybrid chassis build. The AW spur gear (16mm) is smaller in diameter compared to the present sidewinder (SW) one (18mm). This is desireable because my wheel\tire combo is barely larger at 19mm leaving very little room for tire wear. This extra 2mm will help.

Image

Very curious on the performance difference.

Stay tuned.

Very cool build. What do you use for bending your angles for the chassis?
This interests me and not sure how it's done. Thanks for sharing your build.

Hi Dan, Good to see you experimenting  .............trying new things is a great way to learn, improves your skills, and most importantly,.. is fun !!

As you know, a front drive slot car(for a variety of reasons) will not ultimately run with a rear drive configuration, but, they can be made to run very well,....and as long as everyone is running the same configuration, ultimate speed is irrelevant.

Lots of guys in the BSCRA (British Slot Car Racing Association) have built front drive cars (the BSCRA has had many front drive classes over the years), and the following pics. are of a couple of the more successful builds (according to the race reports in some of the older British slot magazines)

Cheers
Chris Walker

Both of these chassis are anglewinder configurations.......the main reason being (and the reason the anglewinder configuration came into being ) is that the anglewinder allows the use of a small dia. pinion/spur which permits a high numeric gear ratio, while equally importantly, allowing smaller dia. wheels/tires.

Secondly, note that both chassis utilize rear tires that would offer good rear end grip (both of these cars use sponge, and these would have had added grip through castor oil/oil of wintergreen etc.)..............while treated sponge tires are not the "norm" for the type of racing most of us do, it is nonetheless important for a front drive chassis to have plenty of rear grip. I have done maybe a half dozen front drivers over the years, and the best ones all had good rear grip.

@ zcar-fan - I've just been using pliers, a broad and needle nose. My main rails are .055" piano wire and are bendable with a bit of grunt and making sure that one end is securely held with a plier.

@chrisguyw - thought it'd keep the rear tires sticky so good to get confirmation. Your first pictured chassis is a beauty and my understanding is that it fits under a Scalextric 1/32 Clubman body. Great effort to make that fit in such a small car.

Here's that vintage build from the 60's that I had mentioned. A friend has it in his collection.

It's very cool and a testament to the craftsmanship in the early days of slot racing.

In the meantime, got mine rolling.

Should be running soon. Got a lowline Slot It motor somewhere in my parts bin.

Installed a Slot It 20.5K Flat 6 motor and got very close to my sidewinder's fastest lap, a 5.957 seconds compared to 5.922 on my wood track.

Image

Not as smooth as my sidewinder layout, but I've found one of the chassis main rails is not quite flat. My build execution is a bit off.

Got a small improvement on fastest lap (5.937 seconds) and noticeably better driveability after:

- adding hinged .035" side pans
- trimming the motor pod edges
- adjusting motor pod screws

A bit relieved after finding a main rail wasn't perfectly flat.

@ chrisguyw - Getting comfortable with wire and brass construction so an all metal sidewinder is my next pleateau. A number of us at GVSCC had the opportunity to check out your Chevron as part of a previous Can Am proxy and were so impressed by the all metal chassis construction and resulting performance. We scratch build a lot more since then. Thanks for answering our questions and passing on some building and set up tips.

Good progress on the hybrid.

Modfied my sidewinder's body mounting system (styrene L channel and strip) to provide a surface and step to place the body on top of. Mounted the channel with 2mm nuts and bolts.

Image

Going to fit thin sponge between the body and channel.

Image

There was a bit of tire rub at the rear, so was opportune to fine true all the tires and taper the sidewalls.

Got a good result with new fastest lap of 5.852 seconds.

Going well.

Switched to the Slot It 0.0mm offset AW motor pod from the 1mm one and got the track clearance to eliminate the chassis rubbing.

Image

Ran it on Mike's YVR Airport track which is completely flat and it was fine.

Testing on Luf's Big Targa track with many elevation changes for a better read tonight.

Summer's winding down with driving and working on my 1:1 Mini, so that's spurred me on to finishing one of my two slot FWD Minis.

Tamiya fine white primer is on my resin body.

Image

Spraying the roof a TS-7 Racing White finish with the body in TS-60 Pearl Green and then an overall pearl clear.

Going with my first fwd chassis, the sidewinder. Put on some fresh urethane tires, trued down versions of Ninco F1 fronts, mounted on BRM 14" Nascar rims.

Image

Mounting system's screwed on Plastruct L channel with double-sided foam tape on the vertical face attaching to the body.

Color combo worked as hoped.

Final body stance will likely be higher to ensure wheels/tires turn freely. Got steel wheel inserts in place but rose petals are the final choice.

Paint detail to come.
