Lotus Super 7

For 1/25th & 1/24th Scale Models

Lotus Super 7

Postby VTECFOUR » Sun Jul 09, 2017 3:58 pm

I aborted a previous attempt because the complete model kit was so detailed that I decided to build it as a static.

In a twist of fate, I recently picked up a stash of incomplete 1/24 model kits, ripe for slot car conversion and one of them was a Tamiya 1/24 Lotus Super 7 with the main body, nose and bonnet present.

Image

Glued them all together to create a shell and opened it up underneath to clear the chassis.

Image

The chassis'll be one of my usual adjust-o-wheelbase ones with the Devised Designs super slimline motor pod.

Image

Should work fine in this small 1/24 body.

Got the chassis done. Rolling on RS Slot Racing RSW002 rims (identical to old BWA's) and Paul Gage 21073 tires on the front and 21093 at the back.

Image

Mock fitted the body.

Body will be lifted a bit at final fitting.

Chassis fit in nicely underneath.

Image

Found the kit's rims in another model box from the stash and cut one down for a sample wheel insert.

Image

Has the right period look so the rest get modified.

Next up is getting it running.

Chassis's rolling.

Image

Parts list includes,

Scalextric Sport FF050 motor, 21k
Dart Hobbies 9t pinion
Slot It 27t crown gear
RS Slot Racing RSW002 rims
Paul Gage PGT 22073 urethane tires
Scale Auto universal guide
Slick 7 bushings

Body's mounted too.

Changed to 22mm diameter tires from the previous 21mm. Model's tires measured 24.5mm but the smaller diameter slot car tires look OK from a modeling perspective.

Mounted the chassis with single posts, front and rear.

Image

Chassis side rails fit almost flush with the model's underside.

Run's fine and just needs some weight tuning.

Time for modeling work now.

Sorting through the model stash to find what parts are available to finish the modeling. Brooklands windscreen, interior, dash, steering wheel and headlamps are fortunately there. Just missing part of the exhaust and decals. Found a driver figure in another kit so bonus.

Image

In the meantime, did some tuning with glued-in 10g lead weight about mid-ship and tire truing all around. More driveable with less oversteer and smoother.

Pleased with the outcome so far.

Looking good. Always liked the looks of these. I've got a couple of Tamiya MX5's to do so I might just follow your lead although I've never done brass before.

That looks really good! I was wondering how the driver would fit because of the open cockpit, nice to see that you managed to keep both of his arms intact, he looks ready to go!

I'm assuming by the helmet that you are doing the vintage roll bar and not the modern one? Looking forward to seeing some paint on it!!

Hi Lou,

Had to do remove the left leg to clear the motor but the arm just clears. That's why I like using the FF050 motors for their low profile.

I'm building the Clubman option which had the single hoop for the vintage look.

Always liked Scalextric's 1/32 blue Clubman Lotus 7, so that's the color I'm going with, blue with a red interior.

Fun build so far.
