Lancia Stratos Turbo

Lancia Stratos Turbo

Postby VTECFOUR » Sun May 29, 2016 5:41 pm

Finally got going on a Lancia Stratos, one of my all time favorite cars.

Image

Had this old motorized Tamiya Lancia Stratos Gr. 5 kit for awhile that seemed ripe for slot car conversion.

The chassis's a modified BRM Porsche 962 copy noticeably shortened to fit the Stratos's wheelbase. Rear wheels are BRM fronts with inserts made from turned down kit wheels with PG urethanes and kit donated front wheels/tires.

Going well so far.

Body's mounted. May try to lower it further.

Image

Chassis's assembled.

Motor - NSR King 25K
Crown/pinions gears - BRM 36t/Slot It 10t
Rear wheels/tires - BRM Porsche 962 front/PG
Front wheels/tires - Tamiya model kit
Axle - BRM 3mm rear, piano wire 3/32 front
Rear axle bushings - BRM
Guide - Sloting Plus

Just waiting for glued in motor to set for a trial run. Curious to see how it runs compared to my stock BRM Porsche 962.

With a 25K King and the shorter wheelbase, it will probably be twitchier than the Porsche. If that is true, just build a brass chassis, eh?

Test ran on my twisty and a friend's speedway-like tracks. Fastest laps are comparable to a BRM Porsche 962 on both. As expected the shorter wheelbase Stratos was more comfortable on the tighter lanes.

With testing out of the way, I dropped the body just a bit for the wheels/tires to fill the arches more fully.

That's more like it.

The decal sheet is extensive but unfortunately has some debris caked on the surface and the white sections have yellowed slightly. The latter would bother me against a whiter paint base. Will either try to match that off white decal color or just do a phantom livery like Camel Yellow with blue accents. Decisions!

Back into 1/25 after some 1/32 builds.

Going with the kit's Alitalia livery, so I gave the rims a shot of Tamiya Italian Red and detailed them.

Image

The fronts are the kit's wheels/tires and rears were turned down into inserts fitting BRM Porsche 962 front rims.

Image

Time for some Tamiya Racing White on the body to match the off white on the aged kit's decals.

Great! At the very least, you won't have to constantly deal with rust like the 1:1 car!!

I always had a soft spot for that car, regardless. It just plain looks cool, ya know?

Test fitting kit's interior pieces to see what can be kept.

Image

Not sure if it's just me, but these 1/24 builds seem to take much longer than 1/32 ones.

Fabricated a new rear bulkhead from .040 styrene to back stop a glued in kit's driver seat and figure.

Lots of dremel grinding of the seat and figure to clear the motor and chassis rails.

Image

Driver figure position is good so temporarily fixed interior door panels, dash and bulkhead can be removed to move forward on body paint finish.

Sprayed on Tamiya Racing White, an off white, that'll better match the white on the aged decal sheet.

Image

Applying Microscale Liquid Decal Film to restore some of the cracked decals.

Fingers crossed on salvation and application.

What a chore. Took me a day to get these fiddly decals on.

Image

Image

There were a few cracked pieces so that added to the frustration. Somewhat matching paint helped. Finished off with Future to protect those fragile decals.

Getting closer.
