Lemans Miniatures Porsche 917/20 test car - re-chassied

Postby VTECFOUR » Mon Sep 10, 2018 8:29 pm

Got this used Lemans Miniatures (LM) Porsche 917/20 test car from another forum member with the full intention to re-chassis.

My recent hybrid chassis build (wire, brass, Slot It motor pod) worked out really well, so I'll give this Porsche body the same treatment.

Cut and prepped materials for the build.

The resin body's modeling detail is admirable but weighs in at a hefty 45 grams. Going to need some trimming.

Bruce, if you already solder, the more you build, the better you'll get. Just jump in with both feet & have fun. If you copy somebody elses designs for your first few chassis, your learning will come easier. :)

@ Bruce - LMs are beautiful scale static renditions but are less impressive in a dynamic manner. If this one works out, my LM Mazda 787B will get the same treatment. Got that beauty from Cincyslots many years ago before the MR Slotcar and Slot It renditions.

@ bill from nh - my path was the same as suggested and it's worked out well.

Got the basic chassis assembled.

Should be rolling soon.

Chassis's rolling.

Equipped with:

- LM stock front wheels/tires
- Mitoos F1 rims/home made urethane tires
- Slot It 21k orange motor
- Slot It 12t pinion/32t spur gears
- Scale Auto Universal 7mm guide

Runs nice and smooth.

Body's going to need some heavy trimming and grinding to reduce that 45 gram heft.

Another fine looking chassis Dan. How are you planning on mounting the body?

@SRQ Sloter - Still deciding on attachment method. Chassis's now ready for single post, front and rear, if I go that way.

Dremel ground the body down to an acceptable weight of 24 grams. Unfortunately, the delicate windows were lost in the process.

I hate grinding resin inside so I went to my backyard deck. During the process, the windows popped out and flew off with the wind, nowhere to be found.

Oh well.

Body mounted with single posts, front and rear.

Turned stock rear plastic rims into wheel inserts.

Stance is good.
