Fantasy LMP1

Postby valie » Thu Dec 14, 2017 4:15 pm

With my exploits at the slotcar club now only a fond memory after a year away, I’ve started building my own track. To celebrate my “comeback”, I thought of doing a special car as a reward for my efforts.

What to do?

Into the slotcar storeroom and where shall I start? Formula One? No! Classic saloons? No, done that! Group5? No!

Hmmm, what about a Le Mans prototype of some sorts? Yeah! Not the known brands, maybe a fantasy livery. I already have four Audi R18’s!

Another Slot.it R18

And an NSR fantasy R18 built from a white kit

So, the NSR example will have to do. Now, what shall I do? Mazda, no, already done in real life. The rest of the Japanese manufacturers are there already. Something nostalgic maybe, like Jaguar …

Or what about Ferrari? That sounds promising too … Ferrari LMP1 Hybrid … The mind boggles.

Let’s see where this leads to.

Looking good, Gert. :text-bravo:

Now for a little history.

There is a G.E. plant just north of Cincinnati right along I-75 that had a P-51 Mustang on display just like the one on your track. One of the owners of the Hamilton, Ohio airport some how got them to sell it to him. It was an H model which is the last one built before the war ended. They had a 2200 hp Rolls Royce engine in them. He got it running and flew airshows around the area for years. I had the privilege of riding along with him to two airshows. He'd practice his routine on the way to the airshow, it's one hell of an airplane. In the late seventies he sold it to the Whittington brothers (Bill and Don). They flew it in the Reno air races. The Whittington brothers were both race car drivers who drive in the Indianapolis 500 and the 24 hours of LeMan. Later on they were both convicted of drug smuggling. You can find all kinds of articles about them on the internet. Last I heard of the airplane it was in the EAA museum in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.

The donor car. What started off like this in the morning …

Stripped and ripped.

Still needs to be tidied up.

The wheels and the motor will be here by the end of the week.

Just to check the stance.

The wheels and motor arrived early!

So, now I am the proud owner of a fantasy Ferrari LMP1.
