Porsche 917 Long Tail re-chassis

Postby VTECFOUR » Wed Nov 22, 2017 6:05 pm

Just got an interesting used book, Porsche 917 The Undercover Story by Gordon Wingrove, a JW Automotive race mechanic in the day with great background info and pics from the Porsche archives.

As the fire was properly lit, I'm going to re-chassis in wire and brass (originally a Fly Porsche 917 chassis) my resin Porsche 917. I think it's a Top Slot that I got as a package of used long tails from Cincyslots awhile back.

Should be a fun build.

Some progress.

Basic chassis mostly done with .055" wire main rails, .064" guide tongue and JK F1 offset motor bracket. Using Fly Porsche 917 plastic front rims and Slot It 17 x 8 rims with inserts cut down from Fly rears.

I'd say thats some progress! Nice metalwork!

All four tires making contact, so looks like it's flat and square, whew!

Going for this stance.

Body's a hefty 30 grams, so out comes the Dremel and sanding bits.

Chassis's assembled with added .032" side pans and rolling. Powered by a MSC Thunder 2 21K boxer motor with 2.6:1 gearing from a Slot It 10t pinion and 26t off set crown gear.

Body's mounted with single posts, front and rear.

Stance is good and may lower the front a bit more.

Runs fine, but needs a larger track test, probably Luf's Targa, tomorrow.

Working out well.

Vac form glass and modified interior tray are back in.

Cut down the Fly Porsche 917 plastic rear rims for inserts into the Slot It 17" rims. Will make a mold before mounting for future Porsche 917 conversions.

Just needs the driver figure and we're done.

Runs fine and can't beat the looks of this Martini livery.

Testing on Luf's track this Friday.
