Toyota S800 Coupe - Spyder re-body

Postby VTECFOUR » Tue Oct 17, 2017 8:43 pm

One of my favorite cars is my home built Toyota S800 coupe. The body was home cast from a fat-flared prototype created from an Arii kit.

The chassis's one of my first scratch builts that would become my go-to adjustable wheelbase brass chassis with a Devised Designs super slimline motor pod.

With some additional lead weight, it's really a fun car to drive and keeps up with some Slot Its.

I've run out of motor pods that I usually use, so rather than build a complete car, I thought I'd give the coupe a re-body with my resin Spyder version of the S800.

I've done a complete Spyder version before but always wanted to build another, so this was the opportunity.

Body's coming along well.

I'm thinking a yellow and green paint scheme to complement the existing gold wheels.

Nice work on the coupe, looks like it has a very short wheelbase. Have you ever tried the Devis front end on any of your builds?

I've used both of Devised Designs's front carriers, mostly the long one for my Fly Classic conversions.

Been trying to get more and their super slimline motor pod, but haven't got an email response from them. Their website is up but I'm wondering if they're still around. Been a year since I last ordered.

@ 73emgee - thanks for that confirmation. Emailed again and got an immediate response that they're taking orders.

Lots of pinholes and voids so epoxy and putty filled in.

Getting there.

Body's mounted but had to widen the rear flares to cover the coupe's wheels fully.

Haven't worked on flares in a long time so it's all coming back slowly.

Taking advantage of the balmy (20 degrees C) autumn day with the final primer coat gassing off.

Will do final yellow coat as well before sunset.

Sprayed on Tamiya Chrome Yellow and Racing Green. Saw a pic of a Toyota 2000 GT racer in this color combo and liked it.

Tried the technique of brushing clear on the edge of the masking tape and it got me sharper color separation, more than I usually do.

Getting there.

Nicely Done!
I saw clearing the edge of the tape on here and it worked well on my 908..

Paint detailed, decals applied and driver figure installed, so we're done.

Started on a dedicated chassis for the Spyder, my usual adjust-o-wheelbase one but with a change. The Devised Designs super slimline motor pod is no longer available, so I've gone to the Winpod available through Shapeways.

Image

I've used it in a very early fat Bugeye and Mini build and can't recall why I haven't used them since.

Anyways, I'll be using them from now on for my little car builds.
