Zakspeed Escort Group 5 Project

Postby valie » Sun Aug 21, 2016 9:31 am

Boredom has driven me to start a new very ambitious build. This time I am attempting to build a Zakspeed Ford Escort Mk2 Group 5. I sourced the body from a scrapped SCX Ford Escort which started life as a rally car …

… which I rebuilt into a Classic Cup Racer, but was never used for the racing as the Mk2 Escort was not allowed to race.

Image

The wheel arches and the front spoiler came from this resin kit.

The body and the rest of the spares, excluding the chassis, looks like this.

Image

… oh the rear wing was salvaged from a Sideways Capri.

Being a modeler, a dry fit is a very necessary step and I couldn’t wait see what it could look like once built.

That’s all for now.

I'll be watching, too. Meanwhile, I'll take a hammer to my green Mk I :?

Good on you valie, I'll be keeping an eye on this too. Undertook a similar project myself not too long ago and now it's entered in a Group 5 proxy here in NZ

I remember that in the late 70’s, in South Africa, there was a series for silhouette racing, called the Manufacturers Challenge, where the body and motor had to come from the same company.
So we had a 5 series BMW with some hot motor, a Fiat 131 with a Lancia Stratos motor, a Mazda 323 with a twin rotary motor and a Zakspeed Escort suspension, some Chevvy’s (Opels) with F5000 V8 motors and a Zakspeed look-a-like Ford Escort with a GAA Ford-Weslake V6/3400cc motor.

So, I found this a, for me, nostalgic trip down memory lane, as I’ve seen these monstrous cars race. And, as this Escort appeals to me in the Ford colours, I am going to do mine to, hopefully, look like this:

Image

I’ve made my decal sheet already:

Image

I’m starting with the body and all its pieces today. That is if I can stand the heat in my “workshop”. Yes, we are going to get hot in Holland today … stop laughing! For my friends across the pond that’s 90 F and for the more informed it will get up to 32C.

I’ve survived an hour and a half in my “workshop”, it’s just a lock-up outside shed. The fenders and front spoiler are glued. As with all modellers, we like to dry fit stuff to see if we like the effect. So on went the rear spoiler, the interior (which resulted in the car becoming a left hand drive) and the glass works. I've also checked the decals by using paper cut-outs.

Image

More to follow for the big job starts now with the building up and sanding the body.

That is turning out very nice! Maybe a good candidate for a casting.

I remember the Mazda well!

I worked for Sigma Motor Corporation at the time, we were the Mazda, Mitsubishi, Peugeot and Chrysler assemblers. The Silhouette Mazda was nick-named the "Tupperware Special" for its plastic body over the full race chassis underneath. It was very sophisticated but not competitive unfortunately with the V8 powered cars that the other manufacturers fielded.

Great memories, thanks!
