Lola T160 build 2 - Finished!

Postby VTECFOUR » Thu Apr 21, 2016 12:51 pm

The first build worked out so well, performance and modeling-wise, that I'm starting on a team car. This one will have a similar chassis and the body will be painted in dark metallic blue like the Gurney car.

Stay tuned.

Hi guys,

Yep, one of my body cast re-pops.

Brass cut for my adjust-o-wheelbase chassis to accommodate a Devised Designs FF050 super slimline motor pod.

Image

main rails - 3/32" square
front axle support - 3/32" square
front axle tube - 1/8" square
front axle assembly sliders - 1/16" square
guide tongue, front and rear rail braces - .064 strip
guide tube - 5/32" round

Sure helps to have done one already and use as reference.

May solder up tonight.

Looking good Dan!!!....... :text-bravo: .

I was just looking at the chassis shots of your previous T160 build, and if you don't mind, there are a couple of things that might be worth considering on this build. On your first T160 build, it would appear that there is room to extend the guide post tube further ahead (lengthening the distance between the rear axle and guide tube). As this is a relatively small car (length) it would likely be highly advantageous to maximize this dimension....this will result a smoother handling car.

And, have you considered using piano wire (.055 or.063) for your main chassis rails??......from a performance and durability perspective, the wire is so much better than square brass tube, and if well cleaned, just as easy to solder.

Cheers

The 1/24 retro racers use quite a variation of main rails. Some use 3/32" square main rails filled with soldered-in .055 or .063 piano wire. .078 piano wire (2mm) could be used, as could various combinations of different diameter brass rods & piano wire.

Took the suggestions and made a new guide tongue to lengthen the post and used piano wire for the sliders instead of brass.

Should have it running tomorrow.

Drivetrain's in and chassis runs just fine.

Trying out the new universal Sloting Plus guide that allows customized trimming.

Will be interesting to compare with build 1's performance.

Body mocked on and looks good too.

Will get some primer on tomorrow.

Very nice. Curious on your thoughts on the guide. Just used it myself and it's really a nice one.

@ Retro Racer - going wingless again

@ Home Racing World - like this guide in general. Pros: good value, wire ferrules included, lots of blade to custom profile. Cons: Wide and flat screw included but small Philips screwdriver required, spacers not provided unlike Scale Auto universal ones.

Some build progress.

Primer's on.

Before paint I had a chance to run on Luf's Big Targa. Ran a 7.65 second fastest lap, significantly faster than Build 1's 8.09. I suspect the new rear rubber had something to do with this. Other differences were the wider rear track, longer rear axle to guide post length and piano wire use.

In any case, a very pleasant surprise.

Sprayed multiple coats of Tamiya grey primer, Blue TS15, Mica Blue TS64, Racing Blue TS51 and accented details in black, grey and silver

Had trouble with the side roundel numbers being brittle.

Team Lola looks good and performs well.

Taking a break now.
