Michigan 24 War Stories...

I thought it might be interesting to start a thread for Michigan 24 "War Stories". Hopefully we'll get some of the other Michigan 24 participants to jump in and share their stories. I'll start...

For those of you who have never raced with "Smokeio", let's just say he has a very distinctive driving style. You really have to see it to appreciate it but let's just say his head swivels a LOT and he swivels constantly. And not just a little swivel - we talking so much swivel that you get dizzy watching him for more than about 10 seconds. Racers on either side of him have to make a conscientious effort not to watch him lest they become so distracted/dizzy it affects their driving.

So Smokeio was sitting in the pits and started whining ( :teasing-blah: :teasing-blah: :teasing-blah: ) that it hurt his neck when he had to barely turn his head (no more than 5 degrees...) to see a race monitor in the far corner. What followed could best be described as a massacre - roughly half the racers took turns reminding him that he looked like Linda Blair (from the movie, "The Exorcist") when he was racing yet couldn't turn his head 5 degrees to see the monitor in the pits. He received ZERO sympathy for the neck "pain" he was supposedly suffering and quietly crawled back under his rock...

While not a war story per se, here's an interesting (?) factoid. Collectively the 30 or so racers consumed about 8 pounds of Jelly Beans (2 full containers like the one shown)!! That works out to almost 3,200 Jelly Beans or a little over 100 Jelly Beans per competitor. It was no coincidence the Jelly Beans were placed out-of-sight from the cameras live streaming the event (so participants could look their spouse or significant other straight in the eye and claim they ate healthy food the entire trip...). Everybody thinks the Michigan 24 is about racing slot cars - that's just a cover story so we can pig out on Jelly Beans. What happens in Fenton, MI stays in Fenton, MI...

I never noticed that they were 4 pound jars Steve. I did wonder if I was buying to much when I picked up 2 of them. Apparently not.

How about a driver mystery?

Team CanAm ran a rotation of "drive, marshal, then pit". With this standard, you get into a routine of who you see across the track. So, I'm in the pit looking across at Scott driving. Thing is, I was supposed to be seeing Pascal driving :angry-tappingfoot: . Well, the Can of the CanAm team was napping upstairs and Scott filled in. When Pascal did come down, he's yelling something in a foreign language that I didn't understand in my stupor :think: It took a bit to put it all together but finally we got Pascal into the race. Overall, teams filled in for vacancies in the interest of fair play. Who could ask for a better group?! :banana-dance:

Our ride out to Michigan from Connecticut generally takes us about 11 hours (with gas stops, breaks, etc.). This year it took us almost 12 hours because "someone" (who shall remain nameless but it wasn't me or Bob...) forgot the EZPass. Instead of flying through toll booths like we normally do, we had to stop and wait in the one cash lane behind a line of cars.

Still not sure what happened but our team had a car that would do 6.8 Dave and myself both did that time in our lanes. When the race started we were only able to achieve a 7.3 maybe a 7.2 if we had a really good lap. That was a disappointing way to start the race. Always learn something in this race.

War stories? How about being handed a bunch of yellow colored stuff including underwear and being told you have to wear it? How about being handed a blond wig for a picture to be posted on social media? OMG!!!!

Sounds like cruel and unusual punishment to me. If I was you Smokio I'd quit that team go race with the guys from Cincinnati. :D
