We’re sure everyone is wondering what is going on with the Isle of Mann round of the Thirties Proxy. Other than what members of the IOM club have posted on SFI we have no further information despite a number of e-mail enquiries. The IOM club clearly has difficulties at the moment (track dismantling and club room transfer) and there are also personal issues affecting the running of the round. However it would be really helpful and reassuring to the entrants and the proxy organisers if someone from the club would post a clear, factual statement on when they expect to run the GP qualifying and the Voiturette and GP races and any further information they can provide.

Best Regards

John and David

Thank you to everyone involved, I have really enjoyed my first, non oval, proxy.
I have more quirky car ideas along he lines of the Richard Bolster Spl, hopefully we can have a similar future proxy in which to enter them.
Thank you to David Mitcham for giving me some last minute tips and preparation and a special message to Tina (Mac's Daughter) to say that I am proud to have been entered in the same event as Mac's winning cars.
Thank you to John for initiating this proxy, I love this period..
Best wishes to all.

Here is Steve Morrow's report from Round 5 on the IOM:

'Well, as you have seen, we have had some problems here. We received notice to quit our club room in one of the hangar building rooms down at the Airport. Nothing we did wrong, just a new airport manager who just didn't like the fact we were there.

Also, three of the four IOM drivers involved in this event had a race at Netley to attend, the weekend of the move to our new room in Douglas, the capital of our island. So, we had a bit of a panic and had to fit the running of these cars into the weekend prior to the dismantling of the Ballayorkley circuit, the week before the move.
It was all a bit of a rush, but it had to be done quickly, so it was decided we would meet up on the Saturday and do all of the running in the one day, to ensure it was completed before we had no track to use! In the rush we didn't let the rest of the club know what was happening, so apologies to those who wished to see the cars running and didn't.

Three drivers drove these cars during the IOM round. Steve Morrow, Mike Buss and Dave Capelen. Each drove all of the cars on just one lane. Mike Dove did race control and the recording of all laps/times.

With both classes of car, it seemed to be all about which ones were the most stable round the corners and could get up to speed quickly. Our short straight meant that cars with punchy acceleration, but not necessarily high top speed, were at more of an advantage.

Keith's Mercedes W165 just missed out on a podium place to Mac's Alfa, which went so well over one or two practice laps, and drove very nicely, but just wasn't hitting top speed quick enough, and lost out on the straight to other cars.
John Warren's car too was a nice drive, but just lost out slightly on the short straight too, and couldn't match its strong qualifying pace in the race.
After sending over a new motor for the last round, and having it installed very kindly by Gerry, Steve Morrow's Maserati was driving nicely, and after going out first, looked like it was going to be hard to beat. This proved to be the case, with the Maserati of Mike Buss being just over a lap behind at the end.
Some lovely cars, and the 18K motors used were just right for this type of car.

Results of the IOM round - Voiturette Cars:

In the GP race, some of the top cars in previous rounds just didn't seem to go as well on Ballayorkley. The Auto Union of Mike Buss, an IOM entrant, had a nightmare of a run on one lane, which put him out of the running.

Keith again ended up in 4th place, about a lap and a half away from David Mitcham's Delahaye which took third place, just 8/100ths of a lap behind Steve Morrow's Auto Union in second.
The winning car in this class though was Dave Capelen's Auto Union D-Type, which was the only GP car to get below 8 seconds for a single lap, and over 62 laps in the race.

There were 3 cars that weren't able to run in this event. I can't remember the details, but be assured that every effort was made to enable cars to run prior to the event, and during, if the problem could be solved quickly.

Results of the IOM round - GP Cars:

Many thanks to Steve and Dave and the rest of the IOM crew fro running the round despite a lot of difficulties. I have asked Steve as to what happened to Max's car.

Here are the final Championship standings.

In the Voiturette class Mac Pinches Alfa 158 is deservedly victorious by a margin of 35 points. Second is Mike Buss's Maserati 4CM very closely followed in third by John Warren's Maserati 4CL. Congratulations to all three of them.

Image

In the GP Class the competition between the top three was very close throughout the series with Mike Buss's Auto Union, just overcoming the threats from Dave Capelen's Auto Union in second place and David Mitcham's Delahaye in third place. Congratulations to the three of them.

The whole series has been excellent and closely fought. Many thanks are due to all the round organisers, drivers and marshals. Thank you too to all the entrants for their magnificent cars. Lastly a big thank you to John Warren for coming up with the idea and format for the proxy.

I will publish the results of the Concours tomorrow. Cars will be returned to entrants in mid-September together with trophies and prizes for the first three in each class and for the concours.

Best Regards

Here are the results of the ITP Concours as judged by the Tyneside club members. Many thanks to them for assessing a splendid field of cars - it must have been very difficult to rank the cars and come up with a top three.

Congratulations to Max, Andi and Matt for their superb cars and exemplary building skills. Prizes and trophies will be on the way to you in September. I'll also post pictures when the cars are back with me.

Best regards

All the cars have arrived back from the IOM and I posted them back to entrants today together with trophies and prizes for the top three in the GP and Voturette classes and in the Concours. Below are couple of photographs of the top three cars in the Concours and two of the cars in the Voiturrette class (the car of Mike Buss is absent because it remained in the IOM. Marlon Foakes of Shadowfax very generously donated the car kits (a Bugatti T54, a Maserati 4CM and an Alfa Romeo P3) for the winners of the Concours and the GP and Voiturette classes. The splendid Nuvolari bust trophies were made by Marc Tyler of Immense Miniatures.

Many thanks to everyone who took part this year and to the organisers, drivers and marshals at each of the rounds. john and i are thinking about whether we have the time and energy to organise something similar for next year.

Image

The Concours top three - first Max Rossmasslers' Auto Union A Type, second Andi Rowland's Gulf Miller, and third Matt MacDonough's Bugatti T35B.

Image

The Voiturette podium - first Mac Pinches' Alfa Romeo Alfetta 158, second missing Mike Buss' Maserati 4CM and third John Warren's Maserati 4CL.

A much better image of the Nuvolari trophy.

Best Regards
