RAA - Round #4 - The River Run

Postby Audi1 » Wed Jan 17, 2018 3:00 pm

We ran the qualy on the RAA cars today. Below are the results and comments from the runs. Quite a difference between the cars, but not necessarily between the classes. On this technical track, drivability is the key to winning, as several of the GT-2 cars outperformed their bigger GT-1 brothers.

1. #5 - GT-1 - Aloha - 6.920 - super smooth and quiet, nice set-up, well balanced, easy driver

2. #33 - GT-1 - Brumos RSR - 6.964 - very fast, unbelievable brakes, some tire chatter, well balanced

3. #40 - GT-2 - Lance - 7.022 - some chatter, balanced, predictable, good driver

4. #73 - GT-1 - spiritracer - 7.090 - fast, rear hops under acceleration, tails-out in corners, but predictable driver

5. #8 - P - spiritracer - 7.118 - Some anglewinder hop, good balance, some tire chatter in the corners, easy driver

6. #74 - GT-2 - austin - 7.193 - very fast on straights, struggles some for grip in the corners, well-balanced

7. #16A - GT-2 - Aloha - 7.225 - very nice car, smooth, well balanced, easy driver, wife thought it looked very Bad-A--

8. #50 - GT-2 - Lance - 7. 279 - well balanced, some chatter in the corners, easy driver

9. #32 - GT-1 - Bov - 7.327 - quick but twitchy, strong motor, predictable handling

10. #86 - GT-2 - arroldn - 7.427 - smooth, some chatter in the corners, predictable driver

11. #61 - GT-1 - arroldn - 7.544 - fast in a straight line, rear hops on acceleration, struggles for grip in the corners

12. #99 - GT-1 - ALS - 7.548 - smooth, but uneven acceleration with rear tire hop, good balance

13. #41 - GT-1 - Bov - 7.618 - smooth, well-balanced, easy driver, some chatter in turns, could use more motor

14. #15 - P - Austin - 7.672 - a little loose, rears feel out of round, hops rear on acceleration, good speed, maybe too much motor(?)

15. #215A - Austin - 7.855 - needs more motor or taller gearing, some chatter, good balance

16. 33 - GT-2 - spiritracer - 7.862 - very smooth, easy driver, could use taller gearing. runs to max speed very early on straights

17. #9 - P - arroldn - 7.913 - too much motor, anglewinder hop on straights, a lot of gear noise when the motor spools up, struggles for grip in the corners

And that's how they shook out; GT-1 class on top, but with the GT-2 class looking strong, overall. We'll see what unfolds on Sunday at the race. The race will be run in reverse qualifying order. Results by the end of the day on Sunday, along with more comments and pics of the field/race.

Take heart, racers..........the missing cars have been found! - "hiding", as it were, under a false bottom that Monte (kidvoltage) constructed in the bottom of the shipping box (AKA a 3rd layer of cars.......). I'll run the qualy on them today and post the results tonight. Sorry for the delay in these last 5 cars.

Thanks for the qualifying Allan, hopefully the brakes will not fade on Sunday and deslots will be at a minimum for the #33. That's what it will take to compete with the Distinguished Gentleman of Hawaii. Good Luck to all the builders on Sunday.

And here are your results for Round 4 in this year's Race Across America.

But first, a couple of shots of the staged cars, the track and the field.

The cars were run for 3 minutes on each of 3 lanes, for a total of 9 minutes racing. The track voltage was set to 10V. The track was vac'd and wiped down with a tack cloth just prior to the start of the Round. All cars had their tires cleaned on a sticky pad before entering into their first heat, and again between heats.

When the smoke cleared, this was the finishing order:

Position / Car # / Class / Racer / Total Laps / Fast Lap Tiebreaker (If needed)

1. #5 / aloha / GT-1 / 76.5

2. #8 / spiritracer / P / 76.2

3. #16A / aloha / GT-2 / 75.0

4. #73 / spiritracer / GT-1 / 74.2 / 6.699

5. #33 / brumos RSE / GT-1 / 74.2 / 6.752

6. #74 / austin / GT-2 / 74.1

7. #50 / Lance / GT-2 / 73.5

8. #32 / Bov / GT-1 / 72.7

9. #41 / Bov / GT-1 / 70.9

10. #99 / ALS / GT-1 / 69.9

11. #9 / arroldn / P / 69.3

12. #86 / arroldn / GT-2 / 68.5

13. #15 / austin / P / 68.3

14. #3 / spiritracer / GT-2 / 67.2

15. #215A / austin / GT-2 / 66.8

16. #61 / arroldn / GT-1 / 65.8

17. #40 / Lance / GT-2 / 6 - DNF

And here's your podium for the Round:

Image

A big day for aloha with a sweep of the GT-1 and GT-2 classes and the overall win! And a good day for spiritracer, too, with a win in the P class. Congrats to the podium and all the cars in this Round! :text-bravo: :text-bravo:

We did, unfortunately, have on break-down that could not be repaired. Lance's Ferrari F-40 stopped running after 6 laps in it's first heat. At first we noticed that the car seemed to be running intermittently on the back straight. We adjusted the braid, checked that the gears weren't binding and set it back on the track. It ran, again, intermittently for another 1/2 lap before coming to a stop. We opened the car and checked both the leads to the braid and to the motor - both fine. So, at this point, it looks like the motor has had a problem. I'll return the car to Lance if he sends me his shipping address; then he can re-join the proxy after checking his car out.

Where to for the next Round, Austin?

Thanks Allan for a good race in the RAA. Next.
Congratulations to our top 3 podium finishers. 2nd, 4th and 6th for my cars. Well at least they had something in common, even numbers.

Thank you for hosting and putting together a team to provide us with a great round. Congratulations to the Distiguished Gentleman from Hawaii. I thought it would take a perfect run to beat the 5, but I didn't even factor in the same to beating the 16A!!! Congratulations also to Spiritracer and the in class podium builders.

Allan
Thank you to the group for getting together and finishing this round on River Run. We can see that it is a technical track. To all the participants may this Proxy continue to grow back to its prowess of time past. Austin thank you for keeping this alive. Onto the next round.

Good news - Lance's Ferrari turned out to have a bad lead connection (broken wire at the guide end), which was repaired this AM. The car is back in racing trim now and The #40 is moving on to the next Round with the rest of the cars.

Austin - where do I send them next?
