Artin American Thunder cars - straight line fun!

Postby TuscoTodd » Thu Jul 07, 2016 10:12 am

With the run on the road course in the books and some time and tires to kill before loading up the cars on the transports, the drivers all decided to do a little playing over on the air field, marking off a 1/3 mile strip to run of for "Bragging Rights". :D
One of the teams managed to smuggle over some timing equipment from the track that allowed ET and MPH to be logged and after getting it set up, all the car numbers were thrown in a hat and the elimination format started!

(for ref, both cars were run off a common controller, eliminating variances associated with two separate controllers)

First to the line - it was Hogan Racing's #12 Zippo machine verses Arroldn's #40 Coors Light car!
Image

Off the line, the Coors car had the jump, but the Zippo car had a fire in it's belly and ate up that advantage by 1/3 track and never looked back.

Car - ET - MPH
12 - 3.688 - 11.7 <--Winner
40 - 3.781 - 11.6

Next up, it was Mnfordguy's #52 BP car verses frank9129's #31 Crab Alley machine!
Image

This match up was a race and a half! Out of the hole, the BP car came out strong, making it look like it was going to walk away with the round handily... BUT! The Crab Alley car quickly moved from crawling to sprinting and by half track was reeling the BP car in! When the cars crossed the line - everyone was thankful that there was timing equipment to make the call - as the BP car pulled off the win by INCHES making for THE closest race of the evening!

Car - ET - MPH

52 - 3.633 - 11.6 <--Winner
31 - 3.634 - 12.2

Next to the line it was Gameover's #3 Lucky Strike verses HRW's #99 Stonebridge Life car
Image

The Stonebridge Life car had the hole shot, but by 1/3 track, the Lucky Strike car was erasing that advantage. At the lights, it was the Lucky Strike car with the advantage by a couple car lengths and setting low ET!

Car - ET - MPH
3 - 3.516 - 12.1 <--Winner
99 - 3.744 - 10.9

The next two to the line were hoganracing's #00 Hogan's Flying Circus car verses Mnfordguy JR's #1 Gulf car
Image

This was another squeaker of a run! Off the line the Gulf car had the jump - but by half track the Flying Circus machine had erased that advantage and was slowly edging the Gulf car. At the lights it was another VERY close finish, with the Flying Circus machine just edging the Gulf car

Car - ET - MPH
00 - 3.637 - 11.8 <--Winner
1 - 3.648 - 11.8

Up next, it was Mike's #12 B&TO car verses Clem's #21 English Motors machine
Image

It was the English Motors machine with the advantage out of the hole, but the B&TO car had some serious legs under it, using them to come around the English Motors machine and go on to claim the win and set both the low ET and high MPH numbers for the event thus far!

Car - ET - MPH
12 - 3.381 - 12.8 <--Winner
21 - 3.727 - 11.4

Next to the line it was HRW's #47 Harvest Ford machine lined up against locoracer Tom's #48 Hunter's Paradise entry
Image

Off the line the Harvest Ford machine had the advantage, but by half track the Hunter's Paradise machine was coming fast! At the big end it was the Hunter's Paradise car by a couple car lengths - setting new a top MPH number for the event!

Car - ET - MPH
47 - 3.888 - 11.3
48 - 3.431 - 12.9 <--Winner

Next up, it was k0z0oo1's #83 Scotch Blue car verses Billw's #44 Coast Guard machine
Image

Off the line, the Scotch Blue car zipped to a two car length lead and kept that through the first third of the run, but at that point the Coast Guard car started reeling him in and at the line, it was the Coast Guard by two!

Car - ET - MPH
83 - 3.713 - 11.4
44 - 3.692 - 11.5 <--Winner

Next to the line it was Austin's #10 Nesquik car verses BTaylor's #11 Pepsi machine
Image

Off the line the Nesquik Bunny leapt to the lead by a car legth, but the Pepsi car was running hard and by half track erased the deficit and took the lead on the way to the big end.

Car - ET - MPH
10 - 3.745 - 11.2
11 - 3.571 - 12.3 <--Winner

The final two cars to stage for round one were ShotgunDave's #7 KOOL car and TuscoTodd's #11 Seagram's Racing machine
Image

Off the line it was the Seagram's machine with a slight edge - but that was erased quickly as the KOOL car dropped the hammer and motored on by - charging hard all the way to the big end!

Car - ET - MPH
7 - 3.555 - 12.3 <--Winner
11 - 3.719 - 11.4

With an odd number of cars for the next round, it was decided that a hat draw would indicate who received the "BYE" run - the lucky winner was ShotgunDave's #7 KOOL car!

This set the first to the line for round two as Hogan Racing's #12 Zippo machine verses Mnfordguy's #52 BP car
Image

Of the line it was the BP car with a half car lead - in what look like some kind of trickery - that lead stayed exactly the same ALL the way to the big end, creating another squeaker of a finish!

Car - ET - MPH
12 - 3.706 - 11.6
52 - 3.700 - 11.6 <--Winner

Next to the line it was Gameover's #3 Lucky Strike verses hoganracing's #00 Hogan's Flying Circus car
Image

The Flying Circus car took the hole shot honors with a two car length lead early on, but the Lucky Strike machine was running strong mid track passing him on the big end to trip the lights first.

Car - ET - MPH
3 - 3.585 - 12.3 <--Winner
00 - 3.660 - 12.2

Next to the line Mike's #12 B&TO car verses locoracer Tom's #48 Hunter's Paradise machine
Image

The B&TO car shot off the line and never looked back! Even though the Hunter's Paradise machine put up a strong run, it was no match as the B&TO zipped to the big end with new low ET and high MPH for the event!

Car - ET - MPH
12 - 3.411 - 13.0 <--Winner
48 - 3.591 - 12.6

Next up it was Billw's #44 Coast Guard machine verses BTaylor's #11 Pepsi car
Image

In what was another squeaker of a run - it was the Coast Guard car with a slight advantage off the line - this held until half track at which point the Pepsi machine made it's charge just inching the win at the lights!

Car - ET - MPH
44 - 3.688 - 12.2
11 - 3.680 - 12.3 <--Winner

The final run of round #2 had ShotgunDave's #7 KOOL car in a BYE run
Image

Not wanting to leave anything on the trailer, the KOOL car ran it hard all the way out the back end. :)

Car - ET - MPH
7 - 3.599 - 12.2 <--Winner
BYE

Again, with an odd number of cars for the round, it was decided that a hat draw would indicate who received the "BYE" run - the lucky winner this time was Mike's #12 B&TO car!

First to the line was Mnfordguy's #52 BP car verses Gameover's #3 Lucky Strike machine
Image

Off the line, it was the Lucky Strike machine with the hole shot advantage and while the BP car ran an IDENTICAL ET to the prior round, it wasn't enough to catch the Lucky Strike machine at the big end!

Car - ET - MPH
52 - 3.700 - 11.6
3 - 3.662 - 12.2 <--Winner

Next to the line was Mike's #12 B&TO car in a BYE run
Image

In an effort to show that he wasn't going to lay back, the B&TO used the run to set yet another low ET and high MPH number for the event! :o

Car - ET - MPH
12 - 3.401 - 13.1 <--Winner
BYE

The final two cars to come to the line for the round were BTaylor's #11 Pepsi car verses ShotgunDave's #7 KOOL car
Image

Off the line it was the Pepsi car pulling the advantage at the half that advantage slowly started to erode as the KOOL car was slowly reeling him in! At the line, with the slower speed - but quicker ET it was the Pepsi car inching the KOOL car in what was another tight race!

Car - ET - MPH
11 - 3.632 - 12.2 <--Winner
7 - 3.638 - 12.3

With still having an odd number of cars to run, it was back to the hat to see who was lucky enough to have the BYE run - the lucky winner was again Mike's #12 B&TO car!

For the first match up - it was Gameover's #3 Lucky Strike machine verse's BTaylor's #11 Pepsi car
Image

The Lucky Strike had the hole shot with a car and a half lead at the third point, but somebody lit a fire under the driver for the Pepsi machine as it was charging hard! At half track the Pepsi car was on the rear quarter of the Lucky Strike machine and at the big end, it was another "what did the timing system show" finish with the Pepsi car inching past the Lucky Strike machine to claim the honors!

Car - ET - MPH
3 - 3.639 - 12.3
11 - 3.636 - 12.5 <--Winner

Next to the line it was Mike's #12 B&TO car in a BYE run
Image

In what had the rest of the drivers going "REALLY?!?" the B&TO car took advantage of no distractions and set yet ANOTHER low ET for the event!

Car - ET - MPH
12 - 3.391 - 13.1 <--Winner
BYE

For the finals it was BTaylor's #11 Pepsi car verses Mike's #12 B&TO car
Image

Off the line it was a near dead heat with the Pepsi car having a half fender on the B&TO machine, but by third track the B&TO car erased that and by half track had shut the gate and was out of there! While the Pepsi car ran it's quickest ET of the event, the B&TO car had another strong run and managed in use the round to set yet another new top mph bar for the event!

Car - ET - MPH
11 - 3.569 - 12.5
12 - 3.401 - 13.3

Congrats to Mike and his B&TO entry!

That was interesting. Coors Light Dodge couldn't handle the 1320. Could only beat one car drag racing.
Congratulations to Mike in winning the drag event.

Great photos and commentary.

It was definitely interesting to see how the varying set-ups of the cars resulted in the field shuffling as the cars moved from the oval to the road course and finally to the drag strip!
Made for a lot of fun!
