Route 66 Slot Car Raceway - WITH PHOTOS !! I Promise!!

Postby mark in indiana » Thu Jan 17, 2013 8:02 pm

I finally got back to posting the pics. So hope they attach this time!!

It has been a looong time since I've posted pics of my track progress. Dundee Denny has been after me to post. Scenery is still very much under construction. But you know, this is a hobby. There is no real time schedule. It's all about creating 'my world'. To refresh, the track is 135' of 2 lane 1/32 scale vintage Strombecker on an 8'x18' table. Lap times range from 11.5 to 20+ seconds. Lanes are nearly equal for lap times and as Dundee Denny can tell you, they drive totally different from each other. The scenery is more 2 lane rural capturing the South West, the Great Plains and Appalachia. The pics have not been staged and track is a bit messy (grand kids and construction). Enjoy.

Edit - They posted!! I used Flickr. Next time I'll try to figure out how to make them post larger. Please bear with me. Thanks.

Mark's track is remarkable, from the extreme banking to the various radius of turns to the long straights.

It is 130 feet of pure smile, and that was before Mark started his scenery.

You feel like you are right there somewhere on a rural road going way to fast for what you should be, very real feeling.

Man, this looks great. Thanks for posting.

It appears you know how to properly decorate a man-cave.

To follow up, the track in old Strombecker. Mostly 1/32nd scale with some 1/24th scale mixed in. I've used both curve radius sizes and have have cut-n-pasted together track sections for special length straights or a unique Ess curve that you can see in some of the pics. The boarders are a mix of Strombecker, modified Revell and cut down track sections that were otherwise not useable. The guardrails are modern Scalextric with the mounts made from various shapes and sizes of Evergreen styrene stock. The scenery is all foam core board, spackling compound, and a little plaster gauze cloth. I'm using felt cloth for ground cover so the cars have a 'car crash friendly' surface. A unique thing about all the scenery is that it's made into removable 'panels' of sections for access to the track for repair or whatever. It's all just set into place. The tradeoff is added planning and some construction complexity that you would not have if it were all glued directly in place. I'll cover up the felt seams with model RR lichen 'brush', etc.... Building the scenery has allowed me to include things that have special meaning. The Grotto for example was a souvenir my wife and I picked up on a faith pilgrimage we took after she was diagnosed with cancer. The camping and outdoor activity, the lake cottages, kids swimming, the church are all an important part of us. So her memory continues on even in my slot car hobby. I've been working and evolving this layout for about 10 years. Dundee Denny has been a tremendous influence on what you see here. When my grand kids come over, the slot car track is the first place they go. How cool is that!! Your track in your 'world'. Enjoy!!
