Hi again,
My apologies because I didn't read your question about the switch properly. I thought you were talking about Carrera digital, but upon re-reading your particular post on page two of this subject I realised that you are talking about the small board with the direction switch of the Carrera analog cars. Well you can get away with removing it for analog, it is kind of useful if you want to run in the other direction without making wiring changes. It does have a couple of inductors on it which is possibly useful to prevent RF noise interfering with other domestic electronics but probably of little consequence if removed.
The other question about the older style of Scalextric track... Yes you can get adaptors, but the depth of the slot is slightly shallower and you will probably need to file the bottom of the guide on most of the newer cars to avoid interference with the bottom of the slot. It is however, a cheap source of track since I see people giving it away for free from time to time because of this limitation, and there is heaps of it around.
Must say this thread is a good read and interesting experiences shared regarding the Carrera and Scalextric digital systems. Sometimes this kind of discussion gets off the rails (so to speak) on some of the other forums, so its a credit to the members here for having a mature discussion about the pros and ams and cons and puns of each of the systems in question.
