I use the same equipment. Servo discs make good rpm discs as well. I use a strip of bare metal foil for the reflective strip.

The cost of these devices is inexpensive, and they are easy to use. Finding out exactly what rpm the motor is turning is quite easy.

I'd like to suggest using super glue to help keep the reflective tape on the spinning gear.
The price of these tach's are good. The tach is an effective way to get rpm's. I hold the button down and see what the display states and just estimate the average.

One thing to consider concerning the disc. Use as small a disc as possible. And shine the laser dot as close to the middle as you can. The closer to the shaft the beam, the more accurate the reading. I used a small aluminum disc, 3/4” diameter. Epoxied an axle stop with a set screw in it. Pained it flat black, put on a strip of reflective tape.
