Speaking as an old model railroader there is no way you can "mess up" the buildings by painting, just look at the 1:1 world; the guy down the road runs out of paint before he's done and the new can doesn't quite match the first one..... Generally speaking, most structures should be painted with flats rather than gloss or semi-gloss, that step right there will make your Carrera buildings more life like. There used to be "weathering" paints by Polly S or Floquil and I assume there still are; colors were "rust", "mud", "oil", etc. Also, changing the signage from the "factory" stickers to something more realistic also helps. Take a swing at it, I think you'll like the results.

I did a pit garage, just the floor and added some stuff to the outside walls and it looks more real than a shiny plastic toy
