Hi,
I have a lot of Artin style track as I was buying sets for £2 just to get motors a while back and my son was doing the same, BUT.....you end up with a LOT of curves and few straights. Now, I helped my son build a wood track in the loft, but I need a test track, long and thin and was wondering if anyone has built a track where the curves and a little straight is Artin , but the main straights are wooden. I believe in using what I have and using my skills to get by as I am on a fixed income.

Anyone prepared to admit doing the same?

Yup I did...






Fun track to run. I wanted the turns banked instead of off camber the way plastic was laying out.
First picture is from 2008 ? Track is still in operation ;)

Trouble is, that's all Artin. I was talking about using plastic curves and wooden (home made) straights to make up the dearth of straights there always seems to be with Artin sets.

First picture, everything that doesn't have the dashed center line is wood. The plastic has the white stripes. We have wood straights and wood curves on this track.

What else can I help ya with ?

Well, who'd have thought it? It all looks black plastic! What did you use for pick up rails and how did you join the sections to each other?

The "rails" are silvered stain glass tape,just like the copper tape but with a tin coating on both sides.
The plastic is joined to 1/2" particle board by cutting a Carrera straight in half, routing a rabbet in the end of the wood the thickness of the track and aligning the slots. You could glue or screw the track to the wood.
I wanted the routed part to match the plastic as close as possible in appearance so I used the silvered tape. Jumper wires are attached to the routed section from underneath the track.

Many thanks. As I can't get a proper track to work (line up) I will have to do something like that to get some distance.

I've done all sort of weird stuff building slot car tracks over the years. I like to use what I have. I wouldn't hesitate at all to do what you have done if it were the most expedient method to get done what I wanted to get done. There is nothing proprietary about an electrically powered slot car following a groove with a couple of electrical conductors running along each side.
