Not a bad fix actually! Might not have the same traction properties, but that works well.
I have two areas where I did the same thing and didn't leave enough room for sliding. I was just under the track this weekend planning on how to fix it.

Have you considered bondo-ing the surface of the border? Then it would be "paintable" and would blend in with the track? Just a thought...you may have way too much track to work with bondo, just thought I would toss that out there.
