That's great. Super smooth.

Why does seeing someone else at this stage always get the "I wanna build another track" going?

It kind of reminds me of my first track with a raised outer area and a recessed middle. I miss that track all of the time.
Nice work Sir.

Thank you everyone!

It has seen a lot of laps the last few days and my 4yr old son always wants to run cars so even though I keep the voltage lower for him its nice to have a racing buddy. His favorite car is the Scaley 70 Camaro so lots of T/A racing going on, I guess the nut really doesn't fall far from the tree..

I did a little more detail work to the pit area today, I routed some slots in the pit area so the cars would sit correctly while placed in there. Once I had those done I used some diluted Woodland Scenics Slate grey paint to simulate oil markings and drips in the pit boxes which also kind of disguises the routed slots.

I also made the barrier walls on each side of the track. I used the crystal lattice strips but I wanted to weather them to have more of a concrete look. I pretty much did this the same as David Reinecke did on his track and a took some progress pics to show how simple it was. While not perfect, they give the effect I was hoping for and I am sure will fit in nicely once I get scenery started.

First I marked off where I wanted the joints. I decided every 4 inches looked good.
Image

Once that was done I used my razor hand saw and scored each line a few times.
Image

After I got the face of it done I did the same for the top edge of the lattice.
Image

This is how it looked after being scored with the saw.
Image

Once I had it all scored I went over all of it with 120 grit sandpaper. The lattice has a glossy texture so just a couple quick strokes of sandpaper takes that off and will give the paint something to stick to. I used diluted Apple Barrel acrylic black paint and just rubbed it on with a cloth, then wiped the excess off with a dry cloth. If you find it looks too dark you can use some diluted white paint to lighten it up. The paint stains where the the sandpaper left scratches on the lattice and also fills in the scored areas.
Image

Then I just used panel nails to tack it on the edge of the MDF and it is done.

Looks awesome. I love watching your build's progress. I cant wait to see it when you get the scenery done. Its about the size of track that I want to build.

Its been a long time since I posted any updates but to be honest I haven't really done much except run cars.. I have been trying to come up with some type of wall behind the pit area where the track is raised. Thinking of a step down wall but still a work in progress. However last night I did paint my pit walls, I decided to change the height of them by using 1/2" x 1/4" strips of basswood. Rather than just doing them in white paint I had a idea to try something different to give it a little something extra.

Like the checkerboard type pattern!
BTW - looks like quite the T/A field lined up there! :D

Johnny,
I routed the track flat then lifted the sections. I didn't have any shortening problems by doing it this way. I assume you are talking about the joints coming up shorter? If so I attach the joints first then lift.

Lee,
Count me among those that will miss your old track. Your scenery making skills are top-notch and were very much an inspiration for Laguna Trace Raceway (the ceiling tile idea was genius). I'm sure this track will be every bit as good as your last - it's already shaping up to be awesome!
