Building Prairie Winds Test Track

Lots of other jobs demanded time today, but did get the track screwed in place and spackled. Also glued down a remnant of MDF under the overhang in one spot where space for tail sliding was a little tight.

Ready to cut spots for wiring and then paint the roadway.

Put down the first layer of concrete, er, paint on the roadway tonight. It's actually a paint/primer combination. How many paint layers do you experts recommend on the road surface?

I only did one coat of paint over the primer and regret it now - my Bondo repairs show through. Couldn't see them or that I didn't get them sanded smooth till the paint fully dried. Now I have to pretend not to notice.

I'd do two coast minimum. My test track isn't much smaller, and it holds up well unless you use it as a table. :)

I concur, 2 be fine.
This really makes it look like a roadway,will be fun to watch you paint in the details.

Remind me to go look for some blue foam chunks I think I saved. :think:

Taping and wiring are done. It's alive!
Derek's homemade taping tool worked great - no breaks, and both taps worked the first time. :P

Looks real good ! Would you recommend building wood tracks to your friends ?

For a small footprint, that's a great track. I've been following this since you started posting about building a track, and even copied the original plan for this track on graph paper to see if I might use it too. In my version the left hand turn is a sweeper with a somewhat consistent radius, though I imaged cars going clockwise so it opens up a bit going into the back straight.

Is that a lap counting and timing gantry on the front straight? If so I hope you'll post lap times for your cars. If I go ahead with an indoor-outdoor 4' x 8' oval it will be one lane too and the fun will come from recording lap times for similar cars then simulating multi-car races on the computer. There are many ways for solo racing to be a lot of fun.
