Better go 4 inch centers if you want to run 1/24.

I will be running 1/32 and 1/25 cars not 1/24, so I believe that the 3½" lane spacing should be ok.

I agree with mattB, 4" minimum lane spacing especially if you have tight turns. I would put 6" slide out room between the outside lane and the wall, 3" between the inside lane and the wall.
I have 4" lane spacing on my track with tight turns and you can run 1/24 but it's tight, I don't think 3 1/2" would have worked for 1/24 or 1/25.

Lane spacing of 3.5" will work with 1/25 cars. They'll be leaning on the outside cars pretty hard in the corners, but with good driving, it's cool to see them racing that close.

You won't have much fun running 1/24 stock cars with only 3 1/2 inch centers. You will also need a lot more outside aprons if you run stockers. You can run 1/24 on 3 1/2, Monogram and Revell both sold 1/24 sets using 1/32 track. That is the track they made, but it is not the optimum size like Carrera for bigger cars.
I have been a 1/24 collector and builder for 35 years and have had home setups using the old plastic track. Trust me, it just isn't the best with bigger cars. If you just want to test drive a bigger car every now and then, it will be fine, but it will be too tight for competitive racing. If you just stick to the 1/32 stuff, you'll be fine and have fun.

The last oval I built I went with 4 inch spacing thinking I would run 1/24. Well, spent most the time racing 1/32 and to me, that's to much spacing. It was to easy going around the turns knowing you wouldn't hit the car next to you. Just my two cents.
