New Oval Track Build in Mooresville NC

Postby Kemtronracer » Thu Nov 22, 2012 7:50 pm

I decided to disassemble my roadcourse and use parts of it to build an oval in my basement. It's really more of a tri-oval. Here's a couple of pics of the work in progress:

The track will end up being 18 feet end to end with a 6 foot wide turn at one end. It has four lanes spaced 3.5 inches. As you can see it was a tight fit between the pillar and the wall, but we had just enough room to squeeze it all in. I'll post more pics as the work progresses.

That looks like it will be a fun oval to run. The little dogleg will add a lot to the fun.

I finished the last section of the track, then attached it to the table with deck screws. I was able to get a 5 degree bank in most of the turns. Then after a lot of sanding the base coat of paint was applied.

Once the primer coat dried, it was time to paint the lane colors in the braid recess.

Tomorrow some light sanding and then paint the roadbed. I'm thinking a reddish brown like our Carolina clay.

Got the paint down and the first coat of urethane. I'm still doing some touchups here and there. We plan on laying down the braid on Monday and hope to be running some laps by the end of next week.

THanks for all your kind comments. I'm really looking forward to racing on this track. Here's another update: My friend, David, helped me install the braid and the outer guardrails. Tomorrow I'll do the wiring and hopefully get power to the track.

Here's a few pics showing the amount of banking in the turns:

I wired the power to all the lanes today and made a few test laps. The tri-oval is fun to drive as each of the three turns is different and each straight section is a different length. I'm anxious to get the lap counter installed so I can compare times on each lane.

Thanks for your kind comments. I've been making some progress in recent days. The lap counter is installed; the wiring panel covered; and the infield painted. Here's a few pics:

I still need to make some controller holders and tidy a few things up, but the track is fully functional and open for racing.
