How I'm spending the rest of my week

Postby dreinecke » Thu Sep 20, 2012 8:00 am

Well, the mileage of living has finally caught up with me. I somehow screwed up my right shoulder around April of this year, simply closing the tailgate on the wife's SUV. Put my arm up, pulled down, and heard a loud "POP!". Then, I doubled over in pain...

It's gotten worse and the pain never leaves even after a Cortisone shot. So, after the MRI, a verdict was finally rendered: Partially torn bicep, partially torn bicep tendon, calcific tendonitis, partially torn rotator cuff, and bursitis. I'm just happy that I did it the right way

I'm pretty impaired, so I'm limited in what I can do since I've got almost no strength in my right arm. So, I'm off this week getting some minor stuff done around the house and most importantly IN THE DUNGEON!

I'm repainting two Scalextric Escorts for my Under 2L Trans-Am class. Nothing fancy, just nice privateer cars.
I'm repainting a Spirit BMW for my Under 2L Trans-Am class. Again, nNothing fancy, just a privateer car.
I'm building a complete RTR McKee Mk6 for Mr. Bob McKee himself! He contacted me and asked if I'd do an RTR. After some nice back and forth emails I've offered to do one for him.
I'm tuning the rest of my Monogram Stockers, all of my Scalextric T/A cars. The tire truer is warmed up and ready!

Surgery is next Wednesday, and my plan is to be able to drive cars while recuperating since I'll be in a sling. That's why I closed in part of the track a few weeks ago so I wouldn't be chasing cars into the canyon of doom.

Sadly, how bad is work when you look forward to surgery instead?

Having lived with bursitis off and on in both knees for pretty much as long as I can remember, I know how limiting that along can be. I can't even imagine having to deal with all of those other injuries on top of that. At least you'll be able to run your cars and maintain your sanity during your recuperation period.

It's fascinating to me the intricacies of the human body. We aren't aware of the interaction and importance of all of the tendons and nerves until something goes wrong and we are suddenly very aware of the connectivity as judged by the pain we feel. As you found out, even a daily action can lead to extreme injury. It's crazy how fragile we are.

I'm still recovering from recent hip surgery and now my shoulder keeps me up at night. I dislocated it years ago helping my brother-in-law remove a tree from his property - torn rotator cuff, supraspinatus and torn bursa sack. Funny thing is it hasn't bothered me for years until just recently. Taking up archery may have something to do with it.

Good luck with your surgery David. Make sure your surgeon understands how important it is to keep that trigger finger working properly ;)

Sucks getting old...

Most of the things that drive me nuts as I age are the vestiges of injuries I got when I was much younger, including my arthritis, bursitis, nearly fused lower back, and crunched up left hand. Add that to my heart and lungs, and I'm basically a mess. The reason I list them here, is that you are much younger than I am, and you might be tempted to go macho on this and refuse to allow yourself to take proper time to heal. Forget it. Don't push this thing. Do exactly what you are told and keep checking in to make sure you are doing it right. Oh, and by the way, if you think this hurts, just wait until Physical Therapy (AKA- The Dungeon of 10,000 Tortures) gets their grubby mitts on you. Oh baby!

I have to second Waytoo's advice. Take care of things properly NOW! I have a pretty screwed up lower back thanks to a toboggen accident at 17 and one leg shorter than the other (only took the Air Force 15 years to figure that out). Then I had a heart attack 3 1/2 years ago (at age 57) a real wakeup call. I'm trying to take care of myself and make allowances for my limitations....thing is I wouldn't have the limitations if I had taken care of things years ago. Do what the docs tell you!
Meanwhile sounds like you're putting your "free time" to good use; look forward to seeing those T/As.

Thinking of you David, good luck with the surgery. I hope it all goes to plan for you with no complications. My offer still stands though if you want me to look after your collection of cars while you are out of action :)

Thanks for the advice. Rest assured, I will do everything I'm told to to rehab this properly.

I broke my first bone last year (my foot) at 44. Rehab'd in 4 weeks.

I'm in very good shape and hike and bike weekly. I also walk everywhere. I was just getting back into my fighting shape as I call it when this happened.

So, a sling, therapy and hopefully a very quick recovery.

As for the cars, they are slowly progressing. I did get sidelined today though: I tuned 5 of my Monogram Stockers. Paul G's tires haul the mail! Spent the afternoon running them when I should have been working on the paint jobs...oops!

Oh, and for being on vacation 3 days...I've worked 24 hours...do the math - 8 hours a day. My work SUCKS at the moment. That's why I said I'm thrilled with surgery - I'll be too impaired to get to the phone and email to deal with the drama there!
