Pappy, there's more to that true story about Adams and Jefferson's last hours... They both knew the other was dying. Adams, being older than Jefferson, was very old for the times in which he lived. In the last moments of life, Adams said, "Jefferson still survives." But he was either speaking figuratively, as in Jefferson's amazing Declaration of Independence is still in place 50 years after July 4th, 1776, or he was just wrong. Jefferson died around 5 hours earlier than Adams. It should be said that Adams died in hearing distance of the celebrations for the 4th, so he probably spoke in reverence to the fact that the nation he and Jefferson had so much to do with creating had survived 50 years.
The United States has the oldest written Constitution in the world. It is the first colony that ever broke from its mother country. American independence inspired democracy in France, it spread all over Europe from there in one form or another.
Never think for a second that the 4th of July has anything to do with anything but the Declaration of Independence. It is arguably one of the most important events in human history, certainly an important landmark in human history. Creeps have tried for centuries to smoke one thing or another into the 4th of July.
