A little known fact.

Thomas Jefferson and John Adams (both signers of the Declaration of Independence) died just hours apart on July 4th 1826, fifty years to the day of signing it.

Just shows to go you that when you get older you have to lighten up on the partying. For those in their golden years no hot dog eating contests or keg stands.

Remember a Veteran on Independence Day.

I went back to college in my 40's and saw kids doing keg stands. Kind of a way to prime the pump for projectile vomiting.

I used to be able to eat 5 hot dogs in one sitting. Bought 5 chili dogs at a Texas Wiener place once, plan was 3 for me and 2 for my wife. When I got home 20 minutes later the bag was empty. That was kind of like a contest because once I took a bit out of number 4 I had to complete the sweep and dispose of all the evidence. One warning though - chili dog with onions smell lingers in a car.

Nathan's 4th of July men's hot dog eating contest is on ESPN2 at noon. In 2018, competitive eating legend Joey "Jaws" Chestnut took the top prize for a twelfth time after downing an astonishing 74 hot dogs in 10 minutes.

I got to celebrate a week early. The grandkids were over last week and we had a lot of fun on the track racing a pair of 3d printed cars. Where else can you have fun racing a mclaren against a pinto without having any big fireworks. The plan for today is to head over to TSC to take advantage of the 15% off sale. Pappy, there's more to that true story about Adams and Jefferson's last hours... They both knew the other was dying. Adams, being older than Jefferson, was very old for the times in which he lived. In the last moments of life, Adams said, "Jefferson still survives." But he was either speaking figuratively, as in Jefferson's amazing Declaration of Independence is still in place 50 years after July 4th, 1776, or he was just wrong. Jefferson died around 5 hours earlier than Adams. It should be said that Adams died in hearing distance of the celebrations for the 4th, so he probably spoke in reverence to the fact that the nation he and Jefferson had so much to do with creating had survived 50 years.

The United States has the oldest written Constitution in the world. It is the first colony that ever broke from its mother country. American independence inspired democracy in France, it spread all over Europe from there in one form or another.

Never think for a second that the 4th of July has anything to do with anything but the Declaration of Independence. It is arguably one of the most important events in human history, certainly an important landmark in human history. Creeps have tried for centuries to smoke one thing or another into the 4th of July.

Adams was very old for these times. He was 91 when he died and Jefferson was 83. All the pictures of the signers of the Declaration of Independence depict the signers as old men. Jefferson was 33 and Adams was 41.

Amen to the Declaration being an important event. Never forget that we sleep safely at night because men and women stand ready to do violence on our behalf. Thank you to those who have served, so I and mine have not had to. You carry a burden I cannot share, but I am thankful for your choice nonetheless. Freedom isn't free.
