How was your day?

Postby waaytoomuchintothis » Tue Feb 12, 2013 4:34 pm

Living where the Civil War was fought has its benefits, like going 18 feet up a tree and using a metal detector to find musket balls, occasionally finding an old belt buckle or brass uniform buttons, all kinds of stuff. But today, I hit this with the mower. Apparently the several freezes this winter lifted it. It took hours to get it off. I'm guessing its around 30 inches long, half an inch thick, and is a drawn bolt. Want the bad news? This isn't all of it. The end is cut off, and there rest of it is out there somewhere.

Ow.

I made a Calzone and the crust wasn't quite right.

Other than that...not a bad day compared to yours.

Nah, just chopping up leaves from last fall... I was keeping it quiet around here for the last few months. Now I have to clean it up before the Spring growth!

This is a big John Deere. When that monster grabs something, it wraps it up pretty quick. You should have seen the clouds of blue rubber belt smoke pouring out of that thing. I have a Cub Cadet, though. Its a 1965 and its the loudest thing on the property. Its also as heavy as the John Deere even as its half the size. It has a lot of parts in common with the old Farmall.

Your blade doesn't look too happy...

I used a big pry bar to get it to a spot where it wasn't sprung against the blade, then broke off the bolt head that was hooked, and when it was loose on the shaft and the blade, I took all the blades off and replaced them. They all had nasty chips and gouges, but the old iron in that long bolt was pretty soft, so it didn't bend the shafts at all. What a mess. I keep six sets of blades here, and rotate them through the pro sharpener who does all my saw blades. I bet he tells me that this set is gonersville.

This thing looks a lot like the long bolts that used to hold a stake body on wagons years ago. I could tell a lot more if I find the other end of the blasted thing. It still could be something completely different. Long drawn bolts were very common in hex and square.
