1:1 1957 Jaguar XK120 Fixed Head Coupe

I KNOW a number of you are going to like this story -

My friend, Jonathan, grew up in California and moved here several years ago. He and his wife had a real cute Nash Metropolitan that was yellow and white when I met them. He and my friend, Tieck, come over to race on the PDR when we can all manage the time.

Being car guys though, he told me that his grandfather was the original buyer of a 1957 Jaguar XK120 Fixed Head Coupe. His grandfather had raced the car extensively and modified it even further. Turns out his grandfather, Woody, was an airplane mechanic that had even built his own airplane in the 1920's:

Jonathan's dad drove the car when it was left to him and Jonathan just brought it home from his dad's this summer. The car has not run since it was parked in 1991.

I got to view the car recently, and it is a beaut! His grandfather lightened numerous parts by drilling them out - you can see his mechanic's touch on those parts. They changed the heads and cams, he built his own exhaust header and changed the carbs to three Webers from a Maserati. He invented his own Torque gauge and added spats inside open fender areas in the engine compartment to keep the air out from under the hood to reduce lift near as we can tell.

The car came with boxes of spare parts, manuals, receipts and maintenance records. It is well documented and I won't tell you how much we marveled at the cost of things "back in the day" - they were dirt cheap by today's standards.

After weeks of work, he replaced a freeze plug that had fallen out, flushed all the fluids and replaced them (4 GALLONS OF MOTOR OIL!!!), rebuilt the brakes, re-jetted the carbs, flushed the fuel system, and cranked her up! As you'll see in the following videos - his son is over the moon as we all are!

This morning when I arrived: http://rmsresins.com/video/garage.mp4

I even got a ride down the driveway - it was sublime to say the least.

Here's the real kicker - back to the racing part - this car contains dash plaques from a number of races it participated in and he even has his grandfather's 1960 Bonneville Speed Trials trophy for 1st place in his class at 136.15MPH.

Jonathan's plan is to simply clean it, make it safe to drive and maintain the history. His dad was thrilled it runs again, and I'm sure Woody is smiling.

Great story of a great car. I love the real deal of motoring history.

One thing I remember from an XK120 convertible at my mechanic's garage was the steering shaft which you can see in the engine bay of one of the pictures comes through the fire wall and the steering wheel attaches to that. No big deal... but the centre of that wheel with full shaft behind it points directly at the drivers chest....please avoid any head on collisions.

Dave
Thanks for the story. Looking forward to the follow up story.
I’m guessing you just ordered another Ninco Jaguar XK120 to mod and replicate this car.
Gotta love it.

Man, what a car and to be able to have that personal history attached to it, that’s the stuff dreams are made of. Very, very cool!

What a great inter-generational car to be passed on, so purposely modified and used for enjoyment. You'd never see that Jag being done up like that today!

I really liked seeing the excited youngster running after the car in one of the videos. There's hope for classic cars after we're gone.
