Thanks for the input. I keep trying to talk him into a Jetta but he's not sure if he wants to go that route. He'd like to get something with a manual trans so I thought a Jetta would be a perfect option.

A nice used VW R32 might be a good compromise he will get his AWD and reliability. Great hauler unless there's more than child.

I prefer BMWs.

sounds like you're a Porsche guy. I haven't seen those as an option in this thread.
I'm a bimmer guy. some of us track our cars. for daily drivers, some cars put a smile on your face every time you get in them.

I really like the VW Group 2.0 turbo. Whether it is in a VW or an Audi it is a great motor. Silky smooth and fun to drive. Not as much fun as a Porsche, but get the set up in a Jetta , match it to a 6 speed and it would be a nice daily driver that can deliver smiles comfortably. My experience with this motor was very good, and I haven't heard any horror stories about it. I was never a fan of the way the 2006 Jetta looked, but once inside driving it, the car was a thing of beauty. Not sure what kind of budget you have to work with but an older model Jetta is probably quite inexpensive to pick up.

Just to throw fuel on your statement, with an APR download you can maintain OEM and stage 1 or 2 horsepower increase (+30-35hp). Add an intercooler upgrade and HRW members will need to hold a few $ for you for bail money.

I owned a 2013 Jetta diesel up until February of this year. Had VW buy it back. Nothing wrong with it and not mad at VW.

Went to local auto show to find an SUV since it has been harder getting into vehicles lately. The new Alltrack was on the list, but then this other car got in the way. 2017 VW Golf R, only problem is the black color. Nice color but not when you live on a dirt road, always dirty. 292 hp, 280 lb-ft of torque, AWD, DSG have never been pushed back in the seat so hard in the first 3 gears, don't know about the rest of the gears because already well over speed limit in 3rd. With zero to 60 times below 5 seconds will give you BMW and Porsche people a few headaches. If driven sanely can get 30 mpg on highway, which is what it is rated for. The Alltrack has the same AWD system as the Golf R.

The new gas engines (1.8l in Alltrack) from VW/Audi do not need timing belt changed since they now have a timing chain. Just do the maintenance and hopefully will be alright. Good choice on your part. VW's are very comfortable on long trips.
