Some fun with the old Popular Science

I'll take it.

And pay attention to the last line "You've got a new kind of car".

And where are we today?

I always liked IH, but from the little Scout to the 8X and 10X they sold to the Army, they sucked gas like nothing else ever tried to do. Hertz used to give a discount if you rented an IH, the gas mileage was so bad. We had a really old Carryall for years, then the early 70s happened and we were lucky anyone would take it. You couldn't kill it with a gun, and it could pull tractors from a mudhole, but man, did it suck gas. It was my favorite duck hunting vehicle.

When I was in the AF we had "step vans" that were made by Wayne body on an IH 3/4 ton chassis. Terrible driving and very thirsty at 15 mph on the flight line. We called them "War Wagons".

And talk about ingenuity in the rewiring by the motor pool! I never seen one with stock wiring but the vans always got us out to the flight line and back, especially ones that were overseas.
