OK teach....question for ya...

I've painted a few cars (1:1) and when you walk out of the shop for the evening and the car is shiny, you come back in the am it is still shiny. When I paint a plastic model and get done spraying the clear it is smooth and shiny, come back a day later and it has very fine orange peel. Looks like the paint was put on very dry or I was using thinner/reducer that is too fast.

What do you think is causing this?

I have tried primer-no primer, enamel (sloooow drying) and acrylic enamel even lacquer seems to do it.
To me it is like the solvent in the paints are attacking the plastic :?

Got some big sheets of styrene that I practice combinations on and they seem to work ok.

I wonder if your silver paint has a problem with the clear you are using?

I like the idea of the water based base coat

Looking forward to your next installment !

A couple moisture eliminating tips I use with my pancake air compressor is that I never store it away with air in the tank. (Compressed air is warmer & holds more moisture.) I keep it's petcock open while not in use. When I use it, I first run the compressor a minute or so with the petcock still open. This forces any moisture out that may have collected on the tank's inside walls. I then close the petcock & fill the air tank. I also run a moisture trap, but rusty water can soon clog their inputs so they don't work.

This is the kind of tutorial I enjoy. Not just photos of the perfect result, but troubleshooting information that really helps.

Water in the compressor. That could not have helped. Something I would not have thought about right away.

Now I know not to use our tap water here. Our town has a really nice "sea monkey" look to it :)

So off to buy some clean water and have a jug on hand.

HEY SHOTGUN
How do you now strip all the old paint off the body to start again ??
Is the build up not filling in some of the door and trunk line details??
Just got me thinking,I should fix the paint on my 55 wagon.
A 91% alcohol bath did not even budge the first paint job so
I scuffed it and repainted, just to have the problem return.

Maybe the thing to do is keep a jug of distilled water on hand. I go through a good deal of it for the golf cart and other vehicles around here, so I usually have three or four gallon jugs. Its cheap, and lasts forever on the shelf.

ecr, what kind of paint is on that car? I use 91% for all stripping, and although some has been stubborn, it always has worked for me.

There's always so much more to be learned from mistakes than from things that go well.

I use methylated spirits for most of my stripping, which is 95% alcohol. Some things can take quite a while, but I've never been game to leave something soak overnight. At least not on purpose. To date I've only had the one thing that it has not worked on, which was a Ninco Ford Ranger. Some have suggested using the meths or alcohol as the soaking fluid in a sonic cleaner for quicker paint removal.

Others have suggested brake fluid or a caustic bath. Not really keen on trying either of them.

waytomuch
I do not know what paint was on my used nomad wagon,
but a full week in the 91% bath did not touch it,although it was
softened, so I let it sit for a week before sanding and repaint.
I do think the body has a contaminated base surface that cannot be sealed
and continues to bleed through.A mold release of some kind that should have been
washed off from the start.

Thanks for the tutorial Shotgun. It's hobbyists like yourself that rekindles my interests and gets me back into the game. I still can't believe that you use inexpensive craft paints though...oh well time to invest in a touch up gun I guess.

ecr, Krylon makes a dullcoat clear that is a very fine spray, and I wonder if you could seal that sucker with a light coat or two, then lightly wet sand it to kinda get it back to a zero point where you can treat it normally. Dave, you got any ideas on this?

The first resin kit I ever had said to use Westley's, and I have always used it ever since. Great stuff. Besides, I can't find anyone who sells whitewall tires for my old Roadmaster anymore without paying double, so I have a lot of unused Westley's spray laying around!
