1/32 Tipo 61 Birdcage

Postby Nor Cal Mike » Fri Mar 01, 2013 11:43 am

I have been a fan of the Maserati Tipo 61 Birdcage front engine roadster since I was a kid. My very first slot car was a far less than accurate Sears Marx version of the car. It came in a set that my brother and I got for Christmas in 1962. I have been searching for a 1/32 version of the car to no avail until recently when I came by this fiberglass body on Ebay. Much to my delight, I must be one of the only persons obsessed with these cars because I won the auction without serious competition. My newly won purchase arrived in yesterday's mail.

I put the Scaley Nascar next Tipo 61 to give a sense of size. This is a really small car! Current plans are to use one of Mark Thomas's mild slim can motors with a BWA bulkhead for the small motor and a scratch built brass tube frame. Originally I had wanted to use a 1/32 Tipo 61 for a magsteer project but there simply isn't enough room for the battery and electrics under the body. Instead I picked up a vacuform 1/24 Tipo 61 that will be the magsteer project. It can be seen in the third picture. The 1/24 Tipo is pretty close to the same size as the 1/32 Nascar.

The Birdcage is a worthy project indeed. If I wasn't such a cheapskate I would buy one of the excellent resin cast kits that are out there, but the cost is just silly. They can keep them. I love that car and a few others from that era, and it would be great to make a field that could race together from that period in sports car racing. Keep us up to date on this one!

I have resin versions from Resiliant Resins and from one of the local guys. The
RR version is smaller, and probably closer to being in scale.
