1957 Chevy build

Postby tin_indians » Fri Jun 02, 2017 9:32 pm

I was dubious about starting this build as the body is physically smaller than the 55 chev and the 57 ford. Both those cars have a 3 1/2" wheelbase. This one is 3 1/8"...the ad on fleabay said 1/32 but using the on-line scale checker, it works out to about 1/37.

Heres a picture comparing the sizes.

I can't use the big fatty tires that are on the 55 and 57, so I'm using the PG 21105FF on the 15x8 CB chrome steelies. I have to remove a ton of material from the fenders as is noted by the felt pen marks. The body is sitting on the 1/8" tubing for the needed ground clearance. Using my dremel with the sanding drum, I just went straight up to the mark. Then going to each side just enough to create the minimal clearance needed.
And so,...yet another build under way.

I hate to see the body cut up so much for tires but you gotta do what you gotta do. Looking forward to seeing what else you do to it.

Well that's a short tracker for sure. I'm molding a 57 in the near future myself.

remove the bumpers, add a few dents, and you've come real close to what we used to race back in the day at our local dirt track. We did the wheel wells with a 'smoke wrench' and grinder. Not real pretty, but by the end of the night you didn't notice anyway. Function over form was the name of the game.

A little JB Weld and some pieces of piano wire to stiffen up where I removed the material for the wheel wells.

Heres my basic sliprail frame. (Kudos again to Harry and Shotgun for their tutorials on frame building.) I left the inner pieces deliberately long in case the chassis needs to go under something a bit bigger, I can just melt the joints and stretch it.
I measured the axle "wheelbase" on the drivers side and passenger side......theres .003" difference between the two. I can certainly live with that. The front axle is already the exact length I need, just need to trim the rear axle to length.

Trying to finish 3 other cars, get a patio built, and loading up most weekends to go to car shows...theres not much input to show progress on the '57 Chebby.
Got a plain interior started out of styrene. My GF wanted me to build a car that could be raced in her name. She loves '57 Chevs, she loves pink, and it'll be numbered with her favorite number "14".
So the cage is going to be the body color too... ;)
I'm going to decal it with "Cancer awareness" I think. Its her most dedicated to charity.

Heres how it sits...standard 1/8" ground clearance under the rockers...

Well....that's it. Another build done. I found this one somehow more difficult to get into. It probably shows in the paint quality. And before anyone pooh poohs the color..this is a dedication car. I will have a special decal created that says "Fight Breast Cancer". The wheel clearance to the body is the best I've managed...nice and close. This car is going to get dipped in floor polish. I somehow lost two large main decals off the '57 Ford, even after it was sprayed with matt clear.

Heres the finished product. Decals are vinyl sheet.
