BARC TwinCan Porsche 550

My Mom passed away at the end of January, and I haven't had much desire to do much building lately. . I have been cleaning out her place and getting all the logistics looked after but today was different and I had both the desire and time to do something fun

The gift card chassis is pretty stable and provides an easy to drive platform. In 132 though the tiny Minebea S can is a little overwhelmed. Comments I heard back after the first round of the Transam proxy, where that it was easy to drive but underpowered. So today I did something to double the torque being produced by this motor. I added another motor and built a new chassis to do some testing.

Results were very good. Slightly taller gear ratio to get more top end and make use of the extra torque. Car turned the fastest lap on my track, and covered the front straight in in about 60% of the time of the single can version. Even doubled up the motor package is small and compact leaving lots of room for interior detailing

Not sure of the BARC TwinCan will ever be allowed to race in a proxy, but I think if allowed it could keep up with the larger motors now. This particulair chassis has full bearing treatments both front and rear axles so it rolls pretty easy,

What are the revs on those motors? Did you compromise anything regarding the weight?

They are 15000 rpm @ 12 volts and 48 gm/cm of torque. Two of them should then be giving me close to 100gms/cm. Much better acceleration coming out of the corners. These motors sit low and the low COG results in a nice handling car. I haven't weighed this car yet. I am guessing in the 70 gram range.

Maybe third motor to the front for 4WD.. or two motors...

A TriCan is certainly a possibility with a motor attached to the top plane of the bearing block. 150 gms/cm of torque would move the arrangement up the power scale.

The idea is copied from Chysler. During WWII they bolted 6 -6 cylinder blocks together to come up with the Chysler Multibank Sherman Tank engine .You do what you need to do to get more torque.

I got the Twincan 550 demo car ready. I really liked the paint scheme Bob did on one of his stock cars, so I tried something a little different to showcase the car as a Twincan and used the red and yellow as a striking contrast.

Added some more details and placed the car on the layout. Driver needs a dark wash to give his face some more depth.

Dan - Sorry to hear about your mom, glad to see that you are able to make some time for yourself.

Love the twin can arrangement, and of course a Porsche is a perfect body to showcase it on. The exuberant era-appropriate graphics are a bonus.

A few questions:

Is that another Lego block anchoring the rear axle and motors?
What adhesive are you using to attach your components?
How is the "engine braking" on these small motors?
What voltage are you running your cars at?

Here is the basic set up

I am now using a Minebea s can which has better characteristics for slot cars. I.e. Good braking from such a tiny motor. With this Twincan design the car behaves very much like an 18K 130 type motor, but with the two motors sitting astride the rear axle you have a lot of room for interior detailing.

I use CA glue, but for cars that are going to proxies these bonds need to be strengthened with epoxy as CA does not do well in hard shock type events......hard crashes

On my home layout these cars do well with a single motor, and are nice drivers. The Twincan idea is done to try and make the cars more competitive in a proxy. The motors turn 16 k with 48 gms/cm of torque at 12 volts. Doubling them up then just puts them more in line with the standard 130 type motors they are competing against. Top end remains the same, they just get there quicker.
