FINISHED - 1970 Javelin Transam Team - Updated 06/13

Postby MoparGreg » Thu Sep 06, 2012 9:56 pm

Hi everyone,

New Forum means a new project. Like i really needed to start a new project as I have many other projects in various stages of being built. Well 1 more cant hurt, oh make it another 2. I thought it was time to return to what got me into this hobby to begin with, Transam racing cars. So the plan is to make the 1970 Javelin Transam team. Ill be building both the Donahue #6 & the Revson #9 Javelins from the 1970 Transam season.

Heres a few quick pics showing these cars. These cars really get my blood pumping.

#6 Donahue

#9 Revson

These will be in 1/25 scale. I started with a pair of Resin kits from Jimmy Flintstone. They were quite expensive to start with but alot of the hard work has been done. The body has been modified into race trim with the buldged guards & some of the race parts. When you place this T/A body next to a stock body the difference is huge. This modified body is really nice. Unfortunately loads of cleanup is needed on the body. But with a bit of time & patience they come up nice. Heres a body after 90minutes of cleanup, see the 2nd body in the background that still needs to be cleaned up.

So thats where Im at. Still a huge amount to do. Im not sure which chassis I will go yet. Either a H&R or MJK or a scratchbuild. Ill keep posting photos along the way to show where Im up to. Im also working on the 1970 Richard petty team Superbirds #40 & #43. Ill get some pics up for those at some stage.

One of the WORST resin cars I've ever seen, no kidding. It took me a month to get mine to look as good as yours Greg. I think I probably said more words working on that thing than almost any other large scale car I've ever done.

Yours is looking great though!

Hi David, I was being generous in my description of the body. The body is far from the quality of the resin kits Im used to now. The last few resin cars Ive made had little to no cleanup. BUT once the Javelin is cleaned up the body is pretty good. It only has 1 or 2 small airbubbles to fill. The extra cleanup in my opinion was worth it as the body proportions are very nice. Better than what I could do with a stock body.

It is amasing what you can do with a dremel in 90minutes :) I was covered in resin dust when I was finished. I sure am glad I was wearing my mask.

Thanks for the comments guys. Ill have a bit more to show towards the end of the week.

Yes I agree Richard the Pioneer Javelins can not come quick enough! The Javelin Im building is a different beast to the Pioneer beast. The Pioneer will be a 1971. These ones Im building are 1970. The bodies are very different.

Jon, no these are not very popular over here. I have only ever seen a few & they were all left hand drive. There were some, very few that were made in the US, sent to Aussie as a kit car & assembled with a right hand drive. There were bought new in late 60's early 70s. Ive never seen one, very rare. So I thought I better revive a project from a few months back. Davids right im a slacker :( But good things do come to those who wait. :) I do have an update but its not much. Everythings in undercoat. When I sprayed the first coat of undercoat there quite a few holes to fill in I did not notice. So everything is filled in & undercoated ready for some color.

Not pictured here is the full interior that has been modified to clear the motor from the H&R chassis. Ill get some photos of that later.

Image

Smooth & ready for color, Im getting excited now. All the hard stuff is out of the way. It was amasing how much resin was grounded away to get it to this stage. David will know what I mean.
