flared Porsche 356 speedster

Postby VTECFOUR » Mon Jul 13, 2015 1:38 pm

Got this flared Porsche 356 speedster into my head after some members' (Audi1, retroracer44) thoughts.

Cast a 356 resin body from my mold and gathered up some parts for a sidewinder build.

Image

It's got quite a wide track at 2 5\8". I know it couldn't make it up Luf's Burnaby Grind Hillclimb smashing into the rock faces all the way up and down, but what about the Dragon Tail?

Scrounged through the parts box and found one of my adjustable wheelbase chassis builds. This'll help expedite the build. It uses a Winpod FF050 motor pod via Shapeways with a TSRF guide.

Image

Ranch Design rims will make it roll with PG tires on the front and my own urethane re-pops of the Fly March F1 tire for the rears.

I'm going for this stance.

The wheel/tires used won't be "scale proper" for a 356 but I'm leaning more towards performance and a low profile on this one.

Stay tuned.

Chassis's up and running. Power's from a stock Scalextric FF050 motor with 9/27 gears.

Runs well.

Modified BWA American Racing 5 spoke inserts were mocked into the rims. Look fine.

Body mounting's next.

That looks like it won't have to do the Walk of Shame.

That is one nice build!

I was thinking..........maybe we need a fat 356 proxy fun run(?) If that has any traction on this forum, could you pop a few more bodies............?

I think it is time for a Tub proxy, two classes two body styles.
Classes would be stock and open, either roadster or coupe.
Stock would be uncut, unflared, <15K motor. Open could be flared to the max, and as much motor as you dare. All cars on urethane tires, stock has limit of 7.5mm on the tread, open just have to be covered by the flares.

Good idea, eh?

That is shaping up to be one sweet looking build! :D
Might have to look at jumping in if there ends up being a proxy for these, with bodies available, etc! :D

Some progress.

Added .064 pans to the chassis for a total body/chassis weight of 97g.

Image

Predictably, it's got a more planted feel. Loosened the motor pod at the back. Not as fast a my flared Mini pick up but pretty good.

For sure, the look's transformed. Not better, just different.

Modelling (cockpit opening, driver figure, rollbar) and paint are next.

As for making bodies available, I'll think about it.

Slap a PAP (Porsche Auto Parts) sponsorship on there with a #96 and you have a 1980's SCCA E Prod racer.

Driver figure and rollbar's in.

Image

Got some performance improvement by enlargening the chassis's rear mounting holes allowing sliding action.

Primer's next but stil undecided on paint finish.

Looking really good! Nice work with the driver and the rollbar. Is the rollbar attached through to the chassis or to the body, and if to the body, then how was it attached? Metal or plastic?
