great post Dave, you know I have built quite a few like this, and they are cheap and fun. its good to let new folks know they can have cool stuff, and it does not have to cost and arm and a leg to do it.

And don't forget the honeycomb board. It makes it so easy to get everything aligned and in the right place before you solder.

Good thread, Dave, the biggest cost in Scratchbuilding is the wheels, tires and gears. Correct that, the tires are cheap, and there is nothing wrong with plastic wheels and gears if the car is just for fun. What I often do is build with the plastic ones with the view to replace with fancy when I can afford to.

For the past two years I have only gotten two RTR cars, and they were both prizes. I have probably built two dozen or more cars in that time.

Go for it!

For me...a home built is almost always cheaper unless I'm buying used cars. Bodies are the costly part sometimes but there's always the junk pile.

When you get a dead CD drive out of a computer, open it up and often, but not often enough the have an FF-050 style motor. These usually turn about 16K. A cheap motor.

Great looking car regardless of price! Cool that it can be built on the cheap and look so good.
