Noise

I have cars that run reasonably quiet without the body - then the noise is amplified when the body is attached. This seems more true with Fly, Scalextric, Carrera than with Slot-it and ScaleAuto - the latter two run nearly as quietly with or without body. The Fly/Scaley/Carrera cars have mating surfaces between the body and the chassis, while the Slot-it and ScaleAuto bodies basically envelope the chassis with less body/chassis contact. So is it safe to say that close contact of the body and chassis is a source of amplification of the sound?

Seems likely, as related to a guitar box being tightly bonded. If so, is there already a practiced method to lesson the amplification that results from this?

You will find handling is greatly improved if you can mount the body loose enough to rock a little. oversize screw holes, sanding the chassis so it clears the body at all edges. If possible cut the mount posts down and lower the top heavy body. A lot of those 1/32 rtr cars have a high center of gravity and lowering the body can help this a bunch. These tips are a good general rule for every kind of slot car. Noise is still hard thing to eliminate in some cars.

Some cars just have noisy gear trains. Fly cars are especially known for this but many Ninco cars do it too.
It can be improved by wearing in the gears, but some cars seem like they are just noisy no matter what you do, unless you replace all of the running gear....and that's expensive.

Sometimes a small patch of Duct tape over the body mount holes will help too. after all the other clearance's are performed. Again, you may need to shave the posts the amount of the tape thickness. I like this method, as I don't lose washers when i take it apart. If the chassis is quiet by itself, it probably doesn't have much gear noise. Its just amplification as you suggest.

Oh sure, you could use those. But you would end up with a beautiful and super clean looking chassis like that! :lol:

Ninco Mclaren: sanded the periphery of body to chassis mate-up. Then used electrical tape at top of posts and got appreciable noise reduction. Will try duct tape for better damping soon.

Since its four posts instead of two, i assume less float is inherant, right?
