Motor and pinion help please!

Yes you can. Just use some fine grit sandpaper and a 9 volt battery to power the motor. Sand the splined area flush and pinions press on without issue. Done countless of them. Doing it now for my Monte build.

Thanks Harry , wasn't sure , figured I better ask first and get multiple answers , than to do it and find out that I screwed up , not just the pinion , but the motor also .

And I will say one thing , that is a very nice looking bench vise you made . Is it free standing or is it mounted to the table . Is it ok to use your idea and make one for myself ?

I basically did the same thing turning down 1/8 axels to fit H&R wheels . Put the rod into my Dremel , lubed the rod with WD40 , and sanded it down with emory cloth until they fit inside the tires . Made sure that the axel slid all the way through the wheel .

Yep. And to be honest, a good many standard motor shafts can stand a sanding. Although there is that "sweet spot" to find. Brass pinions will expand to fit motor shafts, but sometimes the pressure is just too much, causing the pinion to deform. They can crack or just spread the teeth enough to cause bad gear mesh. So just test fit.

I like pinions to have a slide-on fit. These can be either soldered or glued on. I'll sometimes ream out press-on pinions so they slide on. If the motor shaft requires sanding, so be it. :)
