Guide trimming

Postby loosewheel » Wed Mar 22, 2017 11:27 am

I am working over a new guide and I started thinking (not always a good thing). How much guide do you leave in front of the post? I usually leave 40% of the total length. Anyone have another opinion?

Depends on the car, track. If the original guide is even or even behind the front axle, I leave as much forward as I can.

On normal cars? Even with the front if possible. This is on my wood track with no tight hairpins.

I use the same brand of guides. I leave slightly more out front and then round it off leaving a little more material and never past the front of the car.

I suppose that a really ambitious person with a lot of time on his hands could buy a bunch of guide flags and trim them differently. I would expect that where the flag actually pivots is more important than how it is trimmed, but I am not positive about that. At the least the blade should be long enough to keep the braids lined up with the track rails. Probably any testing that a person might do would only be valid for the car and track used for the testing. You might want to pay attention to how deep in the slot the guide could be as well.

If I didn't have a Scalextric track I wouldn't need to trim them at all. It's a small track with a lots of tight turns. I have several cars dedicated to longer tracks that have full guides.
