Updating A Strombecker Indy Roadster . . .

Hello,

I'm thinking of restoring a NOS Strombecker "Indy Roadster" slot car that my Dad had as a spare when he was a kid. I was just wondering if anybody has suggestions on what modern aftermarket parts I could buy to bring it into the 21st century. Any help would be appreciated . . .

There are a couple of variations of the Strombecker Indy roadster as far as chassis/running gear........which do you have, and what are you hoping to achieve with it....the answer may be somewhere between a new pr. of tires and a good clean, to a completely new chassis/motor/wheels/tires etc. etc.

A pic. and what you want it to run like/compete with will be the best place to start.

Here's a couple of photos of the roadster . . . It's basically straight stock at the moment.

I'd like the car to look and run as close to the original as possible while having the durability of a modernly machined one. I'm guessing this means new motors, axles, hubs, and tires but I'm relatively new to the hobby so I'm not quite sure what parts to start experimenting with for this particular model.

It also needs to be setup for a small (left-turn) endurance oval, so maybe there should be a staggered tire on the right side?

I would put a new motor and pinion from a stock scalextric car
a slot it crown if a 3/32 type axle, or parma crown gear if using a 1/8th axle
Reproduction tires are on ebay, You only need rear
Guide flag from a modern car to fit your track

Parma gears can also be sleeved-down to fit 3/32 axles with a length of 1/8" od brass or aluminum tubing. Slot-it crowns are 50 pitch, so you should use Slot-it pinions with these rather than 48 pitch ones.

Well you Learn something new every day if you start the day off dumb enuff !! Thanks I didn't know they were a different pitch I was about to use a slot it pinion and an old cox crown.
