1/32 Monogram Lola GT

Postby chrisguyw » Tue May 15, 2018 11:45 am

I got my first Slot car set for Christmas in 1962.....my Dad brought a VIP set back from the London toy fair, and I was the happiest kid alive !!. The track was metal with really good grip and looked great, and the cars (a F1 lotus 18 and a F1 Cooper) had steering front wheels, looked beautiful, and I thought, were the fastest things imaginable.......I ran thousands of laps, and believed I was Stirling Moss.

The next year, my uncle bought a Monogram set, and a couple of Monogram "kit" cars (the Cooper Ford and a Lola GT), and when we visited him and he showed me his track, I was amazed at the speed/handling of the Monogram cars......don't forget, all is relative as this was 1964 ;)

I never did end up owning a Monogram, as at the time, faster/better handling cars were coming out weekly. Fast forward many years, and I managed to obtain/build a few of the cars that had made an impact on me as a kid......

This is a build up of a Monogram Lola GT, incorporating many modifications that I have learned over the years.

Cheers
Chris Walker

The chassis has had extensive stiffening/strengthening (they were flimsy little buggers) using piano wire, and a .064 pan hung on the bottom (they were also quite light, and the big chunk of brass did wonders). A heavily reworked Monogram "Tiger" motor, and some original formulation Ortmann tires, and the car is a match for any of my plastic cars on a club type track.

The car has been painted to represent the Augie Pabst car from Sebring in 1964.

Where is the "love" button?

It looks like you have put some soul into that car build.

Wonderful work.

Beautiful car, and beautiful work! The old magazines always mentioned the plate but you did a much cleaner install with the screw mounting.
I love the Lola GT...it's just got a lovely shape. Not svelte like a 330P4 or a P68, but it just looks right to me.

Chris that is just beautiful, beautiful work. Some people are good at doing bodies and some are good at chassis. And then there are freaks like you (and I mean a freak in the best possible sense of the word!) that are brilliant at both.

Like you I have always been a Lola GT fan. In its looks it has a rare combination of brutal and gracefulness that I think is unmatched.

Hats off to you for doing full justice to an icon.

The Monogram Lola GT has been, well... I guess my favorite since it first came out and I’ve owned three. I currently have one that except for a painted interior and decals, it is untouched cosmetically. The motor was toast when I got it, so it now has a NOS Russkit....and PG reproduction tires. As always, you’ve done a beautiful job on a very historically important car, both from a slotting perspective and as the father of the Ford GT.

Beauty, Chris. I've loved that car since buying it with my saved allowance in the mid-60's, building it (badly, hey I was barely a teenager), racing and finally destroying it on the unforgiving commercial tracks of the period. Finally found and fixed up a well-used replacement when I got back into the hobby almost 15 years ago. I take it out for a cruise every now and then 'cause it reminds be better times. Cheers.
